Article Synopsis
  • Actinoplanes missouriensis is a unique soil-dwelling bacterium that produces flagellated zoospores, which can swim short distances before germination.
  • Researchers identified a flagellar gene cluster with 33 essential genes for assembling functional flagella, with some genes, like fliQ, located separately.
  • Transcriptional analysis revealed that flagellar genes are activated during sporangium formation, suggesting a coordinated assembly process regulated by a sigma factor.

New lantibiotic cinnamycin B was isolated from the extract of Actinomadura atramentaria NBRC 14695(T), based on genome mining and chemical investigation. The partial structure of cinnamycin B was established by 2D NMR experiments, which indicated that cinnamycin B had same methyl lanthionine bridging pattern with cinnamycin. The reduction with NaBH4-NiCl2 afforded the reduced cinnamycin B, and MS/MS experiment indicated the presence of hydroxy asparatic acid in the molecule.

An endohyphal bacterium (strain B1-EBT) living in association with the fungus Mortierella elongata FMR23-6 I-B1 was isolated from a fungal cell homogenate and studied for its taxonomic allocation. Cells were Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, non-motile, and negative for oxidase and catalase. Strain B1-EBT required cysteine for growth and grew at temperatures between 4 and 35 °C.

A novel Gram stain positive actinobacterium, designated RS-7-4(T), was isolated from a sea sediment sample collected in Indonesia, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. Strain RS-7-4(T) was observed to form vegetative hyphae in the early phase of growth, but the hyphae eventually fragmented into short rods to coccoid cells. Growth occurred at 15-37 °C, pH 6.

Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Microbispora sp. GMKU 363, a plant-derived actinomycete that produces linfuranone A, a linear polyketide modified with a furanone ring possessing adipocyte differentiation inducing activity. The biosynthetic gene cluster for linfuranone was identified by analyzing polyketide synthase genes in the genome.

Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Streptomyces sp. TP-A0356, a producer of a potent antitumor antibiotic, yatakemycin, to evaluate potential for secondary metabolite production. The genome sequence data suggest the presence of at least nine gene clusters for polyketide synthases and nonribosomal peptide synthetases in this strain.

Streptomyces hyaluromycini sp. nov., isolated from a tunicate (Molgula manhattensis).

J Antibiot (Tokyo)

March 2016

Biotechnology Research Center and Department of Biotechnology, Toyama Prefectural University, Kurokawa, Imizu, Toyama, Japan.

A novel Gram-stain-positive actinomycete, designated MB-PO13(T), was isolated from a tunicate (Molgula manhattensis) collected in Tokyo Bay, Japan, and its taxonomic position was studied by a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain MB-PO13(T) was closely related to Streptomyces graminisoli JR-12(T) (99.72% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Streptomyces shenzhenensis 172115(T) (99.

Background: The genus Herbidospora comprises actinomycetes belonging to the family Streptosporangiaceae and currently contains five recognized species. Although other genera of this family often produce bioactive secondary metabolites, Herbidospora strains have not yet been reported to produce secondary metabolites. In the present study, to assess their potential as secondary metabolite producers, we sequenced the whole genomes of the five type strains and searched for the presence of their non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) and type-I polyketide synthase (PKS) gene clusters.
