(1) Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease (MASLD) is one of the most important causes of liver disease worldwide. Meat consumption is a growing trend and white meat has been shown to have beneficial effects on cardiometabolic risk factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the dose-response relationship between white meat intake and MASLD at survey level in a Southern Italy setting.

Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) is the most prevalent subtype of IBS, characterized by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms in the absence of identifiable pathological findings. This study aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying IBS-D using transcriptomic data. By employing causal network inference methods, we identify key transcriptomic modules associated with IBS-D.

K channels do play a role in cell shape changes observed during cell proliferation and apoptosis. Research suggested that the dynamics of the aggregation of Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) into AQP4-OAP isoforms can trigger cell shape changes in malignant glioma cells. Here, we investigated the relationship between AQP4 and some K channels in the malignant glioma U87 line.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks third in terms of cancer incidence worldwide and is responsible for 8% of all deaths globally. Approximately 10% of CRC cases are caused by inherited pathogenic mutations in driver genes involved in pathways that are crucial for CRC tumorigenesis and progression. These hereditary mutations significantly increase the risk of initial benign polyps or adenomas developing into cancer.

In this editorial, we explore the challenges of managing noncurative resections in early gastric cancer after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), starting from the consideration recently made by Zhu . Specifically, we evaluate the management of eCura C1 lesions, where decisions regarding further interventions are pivotal yet contentious. Collaboration among endoscopists, surgeons, and pathologists is underscored to refine risk assessment and personalize therapeutic management.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Curative treatments are available to a minority of patients, as HCC is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. For patients with unresectable and multifocal HCC, tyrosine kinase inhibitor drugs (TKIs) are the only potential treatment option.

Introduction: Dementia is a multifactorial disease with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) pathologies making the largest contributions. Yet, most genome-wide association studies (GWAS) focus on AD.
Methods: We conducted a GWAS of all-cause dementia (ACD) and examined the genetic overlap with VaD.

A very low calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) impacts host metabolism in people marked by an excess of visceral adiposity, and it affects the microbiota composition in terms of taxa presence and relative abundances. As a matter of fact, there is little available literature dealing with microbiota differences in obese patients marked by altered intestinal permeability. With the aim of inspecting consortium members and their related metabolic pathways, we inspected the microbial community profile, together with the set of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from untargeted fecal and urine metabolomics, in a cohort made of obese patients, stratified based on both normal and altered intestinal permeability, before and after VLCKD administration.

Background: Many women grow up dreaming of becoming doctors, preferring specialties that allow more focus on time outside the hospital and on family life. Nowadays, specialties, like gastroenterology, have still a significant gender gap.
Methods: Based on this known discrepancy, a web-based questionnaire was designed by the Young Component of the Scientific Committee of the Federation of Italian Scientific Societies of Digestive Diseases 2023 (FISMAD) to examine the current situation of female gastroenterologists in Italy.

Natural compounds like flavonoids preserve intestinal mucosal integrity through their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Additionally, some flavonoids show prebiotic abilities, promoting the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria. This study investigates the protective impact of Lens culinaris extract (LE), which is abundant in flavonoids, on intestinal mucosal integrity during LPS-induced inflammation.

Daily use of opioid analgesics has significantly increased in recent years due to an increasing prevalence of conditions associated with chronic pain. Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is one of the most common, under-recognized, and under-treated side effects of opioid analgesics. OIC significantly reduces the quality of life by causing psychological distress, lowering work productivity, and increasing access to healthcare facilities.

Canine heartworm disease by and canine leishmaniosis by (CanL) are both vector-borne diseases with frequently overlapping endemicity and able to trigger the acute phase response, being characterized by variations in acute phase proteins (APP). Recently, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), an indicator of inflammation, has gained attention in veterinary medicine, proving useful in several conditions that include CanL active forms in dogs. This study aims to evaluate ESR in heartworm-infected dogs, compare levels with heartworm-infected and seropositive dogs as well as clinically healthy dogs, and assess correlations with other laboratory parameters.
