The increasing number of cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) reported in recent years in Europe and, more recently, in Poland is a consequence of factors related to climate and environmental change leading to increasing tick populations and human behavior favoring exposure. In Poland, there is considerable regional variation in the incidence of TBE, resulting, among other factors, from underreporting of all cases and limited access to laboratory diagnostics. The consequence is low public awareness of the disease and insufficient use of vaccination as optimal prevention.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the immunogenicity of different vaccine combinations using a PBMC-based system, focusing on changes in CD4, CD8 T cells, and CD19 B cells after antigen and adjuvant stimulation.
  • We employed flow cytometry to analyze activation mechanisms, comparing two adenoviral adjuvants with different costimulatory ligands.
  • Results showed an increase in class-switched memory B cells and CD8 T populations, suggesting that effective vaccine regimens induce high levels of multifunctional T cells linked to better protection.

Introduction And Objective: Legionella bacteria are commonly found in natural aquatic environments such as rivers, lakes, ponds and hot springs. Legionella infection occurs through the inhalation of water-air aerosol generated, for example, by showers or hot tubs. The most common species responsible for infection is Legionella pneumophila, which can cause Pontiac fever, and Legionnaires' disease, as well as a rare extrapulmonary form.

Article Synopsis
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of respiratory infections in infants, impacting over 90% of children within their first two years, resulting in significant healthcare challenges in Poland.
  • A literature review highlighted that the hospitalization rates for RSV are notably high, particularly for children under one year, but these numbers may be underestimated due to limited testing and low awareness.
  • RSV infections typically peak from December to April, and although the surveillance system in Poland has its limitations, recent healthcare law changes could improve the situation by enhancing access to diagnostic testing.

Little is known about concomitant central nervous system (CNS) infections by more than one virus. Current diagnostics are based on molecular tests for particular pathogens making it difficult to identify multi-viral infections. In the present study, we applied DNA- and RNA-based next-generation sequencing metagenomics (mNGS) to detect viruses in cerebrospinal fluids from 20 patients with herpes simplex encephalitis.
