Green chemistry has paved an 'avant-garde avenue' in the production and fabrication of eco-friendly stable nanoparticles employing the utilization of biological agents. In the present study we present the first report on the potential of the marine bacterium PBCW2 for the extracellular production of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Utilizing a variety of methods, AuNPs in the cell-free supernatant of (CFS-LBOE) were identified and their antioxidant, antibacterial, and dye-degrading properties were examined.

The goal of the current study was to quantify the trophic transfer of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) in a food chain consisting of the microalga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata as the representative of primary producer, the grazer Daphnia magna, and the omnivorous mysid Limnomysis benedeni. To quantify the size and number concentration of CuNPs in the biota, tissue extraction with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) was performed and quantification was done by single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS). The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of the test species for CuNPs varied between 10 - 10 L/kg dry weight when expressing the internal concentration on a mass basis, which was lower than BCF values reported for Cu (10 - 10 L/kg dry weight).

Objectives: Recent insights supporting the safety of live-attenuated vaccines and novel studies on the immunogenicity of vaccinations in the era of biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs in paediatric patients with autoimmune/inflammatory rheumatic diseases (pedAIIRD) necessitated updating the EULAR recommendations.
Methods: Recommendations were developed using the EULAR standard operating procedures. Two international expert committees were formed to update the vaccination recommendations for both paediatric and adult patients with AIIRD.

With the rapid development of nanotechnology in agriculture, there is increasing urgency to assess the impacts of nanoparticles (NPs) on the soil environment. This study merged raw high-throughput sequencing (HTS) data sets generated from 365 soil samples to reveal the potential ecological effects of NPs on soil microbial community by means of metadata analysis and machine learning methods. Metadata analysis showed that treatment with nanoparticles did not have a significant impact on the alpha diversity of the microbial community, but significantly altered the beta diversity.

Similarity assessment is one of the means of optimally using scarcely available experimental data on the fate and hazards of nanoforms (NFs) for regulatory purposes. For a set of NFs that are shown to be similar it is allowed in a regulatory context to apply the information available on any of the NFs within the group to the whole set of NFs. Nanomaterials (NMs) taken up from the environment carry a complex ecocorona consisting of dissolved organic matter. An ecocorona is assumed to influence the interactions between NMs and endogenous biomolecules and consequently affects the formation of a biological corona (biocorona) and the biological fate of the NMs. This study shows that biomolecules in fish plasma attach immediately (within <5 min) to the surface of SWCNTs and the evolution of the biocorona is a size dependent phenomenon.

Nanoforms can be manufactured in plenty of variants by differing their physicochemical properties and toxicokinetic behaviour which can affect their hazard potential. To avoid testing of each single nanomaterial and nanoform variation and subsequently save resources, grouping and read-across strategies are used to estimate groups of substances, based on carefully selected evidence, that could potentially have similar human health and environmental hazard impact. In the context of the EU GRACIOUS project, we propose a novel procedure for similarity assessment and grouping of nanomaterials. This methodology is based on the (1) Arsinh transformation function for scalar properties, (2) full curve shape comparison by application of a modified Kolmogorov-Smirnov metric for bivariate properties, (3) Ordered Weighted Average (OWA) aggregation-based grouping distance, and (4) hierarchical clustering. The approach allows for grouping of nanomaterials that is not affected by the dataset, so that group membership will not change when new candidates are included in the set of assessed materials.

The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment poses a threat to human health and therefore their environmental behavior needs to be studied urgently. A systematic study was conducted on the photodegradation pathways of the cell-free tetracycline resistance gene (Tc-ARG) under simulated sunlight irradiation.
