Adductomic signatures of benzene exposure provide insights into cancer induction.

Carcinogenesis

May 2018

Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA.

Although benzene has long been recognized as a cause of human leukemia, the mechanism by which this simple molecule causes cancer has been problematic. A complicating factor is benzene metabolism, which produces many reactive intermediates, some specific to benzene and others derived from redox processes. Using archived serum from 20 nonsmoking Chinese workers, 10 with and 10 without occupational exposure to benzene (exposed: 3.

Background: Brucellosis incidence in China is divided into three stages: high incidence (1950s-1960s), decline (1970s-1980s), and re-emergence (1990s-2010s). At the re-emergence stage, Brucellosis incidence grew exponentially and spread to all 32 provinces. We describe the magnitude and the etiological distribution changes in mainland China by genotyping data and emphasize its recent reemergence.

March 2018

National Institute of Occupational Health and Poison Control, Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing 100050, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the toxicity of the lethal mushroom A. exitialis and its peptide toxins using beagles, which showed signs of toxicity such as vomiting and diarrhea after ingestion.
  • The toxicokinetics showed that specific toxins like α-amanitin and β-amanitin were rapidly absorbed and eliminated from the plasma, with acute liver damage occurring after a 12-24 hour latency period.
  • Treatment methods like gastric lavage and hemodialysis were ineffective post-ingestion, but enhanced urinary excretion of amatoxins may be beneficial within the first two days after consumption.

Background: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a complex, irreversible disease caused by the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. In recent years, a great many studies have been done to explore the NIHL susceptibility genes among humans. So far, high powerful detections have been founded that genes of potassium ion channel genes (KCNQ4 and KCNE1), catalase (CAT), protocadherin 15 (PCDH15), myosin 14 (MYH14) and heart shock protein (HSP70) which have been identified in more than one population may be associated with the susceptibility to NIHL.

Refractory ceramic fibers (RCFs) can cause adverse health effects on workers' respiratory system, yet no proper biomarkers have been used to detect early pulmonary injury of RCFs-exposed workers. This study assessed the levels of two biomarkers that are related to respiratory injury in RCFs-exposed workers, and explored their relations with lung function. The exposure levels of total dust and respirable fibers were measured simultaneously in RCFs factories.

The relationship between diesel engine exhaust (DEE), a known lung carcinogen, and immune/inflammatory markers that have been prospectively associated with lung cancer risk is not well understood. To provide insight into these associations, we conducted a cross-sectional molecular epidemiology study of 54 males highly occupationally exposed to DEE and 55 unexposed male controls from representative workplaces in China. We measured plasma levels of 64 immune/inflammatory markers in all subjects using Luminex bead-based assays, and compared our findings to those from a nested case-control study of these markers and lung cancer risk, which had been conducted among never-smoking women in Shanghai using the same multiplex panels.
