ER:YAG laser and experimental resin-based dental adhesive loaded with functionalized carbonated apatite filler were used in this study to evaluate the dentin interaction in terms of penetration and occlusion of the dentinal tubules aiding in the control of dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Spheroidal Carbonated apatite nanoparticles (N-CAP), with an average size of 20±5 nm diameter, were synthesized, characterized, and incorporated in a universal adhesive "All Bond Universal, Bisco, USA", in (2% weight) concentration. Er:YAG laser "Lightwalker, FOTONA, EU" was adjusted to an energy output of 40mJ/ pulse and pulse repetition of 10 Hz for 10 seconds.

Adhesive dentistry has made it feasible to design restorations with high aesthetic qualities and little invasiveness. However, the freshly cut dentin after the tooth preparation needs to be sealed to prevent its contaminations, bacterial leakage, and hypersensitivity. Consequently, the immediate dentin sealing (IDS) method has been advised.

Article Synopsis
  • - Nail psoriasis is a tough-to-treat, chronic inflammatory condition that can severely impact quality of life and is linked to greater psoriasis severity, as well as anxiety.
  • - A study examined the effectiveness of the long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser in treating fingernail psoriasis compared to untreated control nails by assessing various factors including the NAPSI score and ultrasonographic measures.
  • - Results showed significant improvement in the laser-treated group for several clinical and ultrasonographic metrics, while the control group showed only a slight, non-significant improvement, indicating that the Nd: YAG laser may be beneficial for managing nail psoriasis.

  • Enterococcus faecalis is a highly resistant bacterium commonly found in root canal infections, prompting research into innovative disinfection methods like photoinactivation with visible light.
  • This study focused on how femtosecond laser irradiation affects vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis V583, assessing the impact of wavelength and energy density on bacterial viability and growth.
  • The results revealed that wavelengths of 430 nm and 435 nm at a fluence of 1000 J/cm significantly reduced the bacteria's viability by nearly 98% and emphasized the need to optimize laser parameters for effective bacterial inactivation.

Purpose: Conventional approaches for enhancing wound healing may not always yield satisfactory results. Instead, we test the effectiveness of a newly developed photodynamic therapy (PDT) that uses methylene blue (MB) loaded with polyethylene glycol (PEG) (MB-PEG) hydrogel to accelerate wound healing process in mice.

Methods: A dorsal skin incision with 6 mm punch which topically subjected to MB-PEG hydrogel and a low-level laser light of red light to assess the regeneration process of wounded skin.

Non-pigmented laser hair removal mediated via sepia melanin nanoparticles: study on albino mice.

Drug Dev Ind Pharm

June 2024

Pharmaceutical Technology Unit, Department of Medical Applications of Laser, National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt.

Objectives: Melanin is considered the main chromophore for laser hair removal. Due to a lack of laser-absorbing chromophores, removing non-pigmented hair with laser is quite problematic with unsatisfactory outcomes. This problem could be solved by delivering more melanin to the area around the hair follicle and enhancing that area as a target for light absorption.

Recently, gold nanoparticles (Au Nps) have gained tremendous attention for its unique properties as a safe nanocarrier for delivering drugs that are used in different disease diagnoses. Although silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been generally applied due to their strong antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, their toxicity is a subject of sustained debate, thus requiring further studies. The present study aims to evaluate the potential protective effect of gold nanoparticles and phthalocyanine-gold nanoconjugates (Pc-Au NCs) against the hepatorenal toxicity of silver nanoparticles in male rats.

Cancer is a deadly illness with a convoluted pathogenesis. The most prevalent restrictions that frequently result in treatment failure for cancer chemotherapy include lack of selectivity, cytotoxicity, and multidrug resistance. Thus, considerable efforts have been focused in recent years on the establishment of a modernistic sector termed nano-oncology, which offers the option of employing nanoparticles (NPs) with the objective of detecting, targeting, and treating malignant disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of a picosecond Nd:YAG laser versus a fractional CO laser in treating postburn scars, as the picosecond laser was initially designed for tattoo removal but is now being explored for broader applications.
  • Fifteen patients had their postburn scars treated with both laser technologies on different halves of the scarred areas, and after three treatment sessions, objective and subjective outcomes were analyzed.
  • Results showed both lasers improved the scars, but the fractional CO laser had a statistically significant edge in some areas, while the picosecond laser excelled in reducing hyperpigmented scars.
