Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has promoted an intensive investigation into the pathophysiological mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, risk factors, and its impact on disease severity. Vitamin D has generated significant attention for its potential role in viral prevention and immune defense due to its pleiotropic functions, including immunomodulation and antimicrobial effects. This study aimed to assess serum 25(OH)D3 levels in patients with COVID-19 compared to those with other viral respiratory infections and to evaluate associations of vitamin D levels with symptomatology, clinical characteristics, presence of comorbidities and laboratory investigation.

Introduction: This paper examines the use of local antibiotic therapy in one-stage septic revision surgery for late periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs). This case study suggests that morselized bone allografts impregnated with antibiotics in powder form are a preferable alternative to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) because they can generate higher local antibiotic concentrations. Current research also recommends using vancomycin and aminoglycosides as the preferred choice of antibiotics, as they may have low diffusion in tissues when administered intravenously, but are effective when administered locally.

Pulmonary abscess is a rare but serious condition in pediatric patients, caused by severe pulmonary infection that leads to tissue destruction and necrosis. It can be classified as primary or secondary depending on the cause. Establishing an etiology in pediatric pulmonary abscesses is challenging, underscoring the essential role of advanced imaging techniques, such as computed tomography, in achieving an accurate diagnosis and differentiating among various conditions that may mimic lung abscess.

Background: Histological findings of infective endocarditis (IEs) in mechanical valves present a complex diagnostic challenge owing to the lack of a precise definition. This ambiguity is further complicated by the natural degenerative processes that occur in the mechanical valves over time. Consequently, pathologists and clinicians face significant difficulties in distinguishing between genuine infective processes and the normal wear and tear of mechanical valves.

Background And Aims: Pan-genotypic ribavirin-free oral direct-acting antivirals, including the glecaprevir/pibrentasvir combination, are recommended for the treatment of most patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. In Romania, the HCV-infected patient population receiving glecaprevir/pibrentasvir is not well characterized and data on treatment effectiveness is lacking. The ODYSSEY study aimed to provide insights into the characteristics and treatment outcomes of HCV-infected Romanian patients receiving 8-week therapy with glecaprevir/pibrentasvir.

: This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how HIV alters normal aging trajectories in the brain, presenting the HIV-related molecular mechanisms and pathophysiological pathways involved in brain aging. The review explores the roles of inflammation, oxidative stress, and viral persistence in the brain, highlighting how these factors contribute to neuronal damage and cognitive impairment and accelerate normal brain aging. Additionally, it also addresses the impact of antiretroviral therapy on brain aging and the biological markers associated with its occurrence.

Objectives: Our objective was to explore how women living with HIV aged ≥40 years perceive their care in relation to their HIV infection, comorbidities, and menopausal health and to evaluate the extent to which the care they receive meets their expectations, comparatively across World Health Organization (WHO) European regions.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey (May-December 2023) among women living with HIV aged ≥40 years from the WHO European region. Five dimensions of care were assessed: content of care, information, relationship with caregiver, organization of care, and patients' rights and privacy, in addition to management of non-HIV comorbidities and menopause.

Monitoring the HIV epidemic in Romania has proven challenging due to many factors, including the reluctance of newly diagnosed patients to disclose relevant epidemiological aspects during the clinical interview, such as sexual orientation or the existence of previous issues with injectable drug usage. We propose in this study a molecular approach to mitigate this problem with the help of bioinformatic tools, such as cluster analysis of phylogenetic trees. Both a maximum likelihood estimation, as implemented with FastTree, and a Bayesian approach, as used in BEAST, have been applied to our data set of 312 HIV subtype F1 gene sequences.

Tuberculosis is the primary cause of death due to infection in the world. Identification of in sputum is a diagnostic test, which can be used in screening programs-especially in countries with a high incidence of tuberculosis-to identify and treat those persons with the highest risk of disseminating the infection. We previously developed an algorithm which is able to automatically detect mycobacteria on tissue; in particular, our algorithm identified acid-fast bacilli on tissue with 100% specificity, 95.

Introduction: is one of the associated bacteria that can cause the rare but high mortality hematological pathology known as purpura fulminans (PF) in both adults and children. Pediatric patients with PF can progress quickly to sepsis and multiorgan failure, especially immunocompromised individuals and young children. Due to the thrombotic blockage of blood arteries in PF, there is diffuse intravascular thrombosis and hemorrhagic infarction of the skin, which evolves from ecchymosis to skin necrosis, risk of limb sequelae, sepsis and fatality.
