Rising atmospheric CO generally increases yield of indica rice, one of the two main Asian cultivated rice subspecies, more strongly than japonica rice, the other main subspecies. The molecular mechanisms driving this difference remain unclear, limiting the potential of future rice yield increases through breeding efforts. Here, we show that between-species variation in the DNR1 (DULL NITROGEN RESPONSE1) allele, a regulator of nitrate-use efficiency in rice plants, explains the divergent response to elevated atmospheric CO (eCO) conditions.

The lack of cost-effective nutrient sources and harvesting methods is currently a major obstacle to the production of sustainable biofuels from microalgae. In this study, Chlorella pyrenoidosa was cultured with saline wastewater in a stirred photobioreactor, and lipid-rich flocculent microalgae particles were successfully constructed. As the influent salinity of the photobioreactor increased from 0% to 3%, the particle size and sedimentation rate of flocculent microalgae particles gradually increased, and the lipid accumulation of microalgae also increased gradually.

Background: The gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) is a marine reef fish commonly found in coastal and shelf waters of the tropical and subtropical western Atlantic Ocean. In this work, a draft reference genome was developed to support population genomic studies of gray snapper needed to assist with conservation and fisheries management efforts.
Methods And Results: Hybrid assembly of PacBio and Illumina sequencing reads yielded a 1,003,098,032 bp reference across 2039 scaffolds with N50 and L50 values of 1,691,591 bp and 163 scaffolds, respectively.

The photo-induced CO-releasing properties of the dark-stable complex [RuCl(CO)L] (L = 2-(pyridin-2-yl)quinoxaline) were investigated under 468 nm light exposure in the presence and absence of biomolecules such as histidine, calf thymus DNA and hen egg white lysozyme. The CO release kinetics were consistent regardless of the presence of these biomolecules, suggesting that they did not influence the CO release mechanism. The quinoxaline ligand demonstrated exceptional cytotoxicity against human acute monocytic leukemia cells (THP-1), with evidence of potential DNA damage ascertained by comet assay, while it remained non-toxic to normal kidney epithelial cells derived from African green monkey (Vero) cell lines.

Energy deprivation and metabolic rewiring of cardiomyocytes are widely recognized hallmarks of heart failure. Here, we report that HEY2 (a Hairy/Enhancer-of-split-related transcriptional repressor) is upregulated in hearts of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. Induced Hey2 expression in zebrafish hearts or mammalian cardiomyocytes impairs mitochondrial respiration, accompanied by elevated ROS, resulting in cardiomyocyte apoptosis and heart failure.

Prime editing enables precise and efficient genome editing, but its efficacy is hindered by pegRNA's 3' extension, forming secondary structures due to high complementarity with the protospacer. The continuous presence of the prime editing system also leads to unintended indel formation, raising safety concerns for therapeutic applications. Few metrics exist to describe phenotypic diversity within ophthalmic imaging datasets, with researchers often using ethnicity as a surrogate marker for biological variability. We derived a continuous, measured metric, the retinal pigment score (RPS), that quantifies the degree of pigmentation from a colour fundus photograph of the eye. RPS was validated using two large epidemiological studies with demographic and genetic data (UK Biobank and EPIC-Norfolk Study) and reproduced in a Tanzanian, an Australian, and a Chinese dataset.
