The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Icefish, was determined by the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis. The complete mitogenome was 17,452 bp in length, which encoded the canonical 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, and two non-coding regions. As shown in the other notothenids, translocation of ND6 and an additional non-coding region were identified, which is different from the typical vertebrate mitochondrial genomes.

The objective of this study was to investigate safety and efficacy using a low-temperature immunization protocol with NNV in sevenband grouper, Epinephelus septemfasciatus. Further, NNV specific antibody post immunization and intramuscularly challenge was also evaluated. Immunization at low temperature resulted in a low titer virus infection in brain tissues without any clinical symptoms of infection such as sluggish behavior and/or spinning, rotating swimming being observed, and no mortality was observed.

River and coastal sediments were collected at 17 stations in Ulsan, the largest industrial city in South Korea, to evaluate the levels, profiles, emission sources, and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The mean concentration of Σ PAHs was 722 ng/g, and fluoranthene was a predominant compound. PAHs with 4-6 rings showed higher proportions than PAHs with 2-3 rings.

Recently, a putative new hyperparasitic haplosporidian in the genus Urosporidium was identified from metacercariae of the trematode Parvatrema duboisi infecting Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum on the west coast of Korea. In this study, we applied small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequences as a marker to substantiate the phylogenetic relationship of the unidentified Urosporidium within the Order Haplosporida. In our phylogenetic analysis, the 1890 bp of SSU rDNA sequences obtained were closely related to a haplosporidian parasite forming a sister clade to Urosporidium group, although the gene sequences were only 89.

The subtropical brooding oyster (= ) (Pilsbry, 1904) occurs at high density in the shallow, subtidal, rocky bottom in Jeju Island, off the south coast of Korea, where the sea surface temperature and salinity varies annually from 13 to 25°C and 30 to 33 ppt, respectively. In this study, the annual gametogenesis and early larval development of was examined, using histology and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Histology indicated that the females and males initiated gonial mitosis in September, shortly after sexual resting in August.

We conducted experiments to investigate the effects of finfish aquaculture and to propose appropriate proxies for assessing their environmental impact. Due to enhanced fish feed input, sulfate reduction (SR) and the resulting metabolic products (HS, NH, PO) were significantly greater at the farm than at the control site. Benthic release of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus (DIP) from farm sediment accounted for 52-837% and 926-1048%, respectively, of the potential DIN and DIP demand for phytoplankton production.

Calpains (CAPNs) belong to the papain superfamily of cysteine proteases, and they are calcium-dependent cytoplasmic cysteine proteases that regulate a variety of physiological processes. We obtained the sequence of CAPN3 from an NGS-based analysis of Pagrus major (PmCAPN3) and confirmed the conserved molecular biological properties in the predicted amino acid sequence. The amino acid sequence and predicted domains of CAPN3 were found to be highly conserved in all of the examined species, and one catalytic domain and four calcium binding sites were identified.

Accumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in marine mammals is of great concern and is associated with declining populations. The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in blubber of finless porpoises (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) collected from Korean coastal waters in 2010 and 2015, to assess the concentrations, time trends, and ecotoxicological effects. Among the POPs measured, DDTs were detected at the highest concentrations, followed by PCBs and PBDEs.
