Background: Preoperative intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) before coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) could improve operative outcomes by augmenting the diastolic coronary blood flow. Data on preoperative IABP use in patients with left-main coronary artery (LMCA) disease are limited. This study aimed to characterize patients who received preoperative IABP before CABG for LMCA and evaluate its effect on postoperative outcomes.

Background: The present study investigated the outcomes and possible predictive factors of autologous bone marrow cells (BMCs) therapy in patients with "no-option" critical limb ischaemia (CLI). It was focused on exploring the clinical background and prior statin and renin-angiotensin system (RAS)-acting agents pharmacotherapy related to the therapeutic efficacy of BMCs treatment.
Methods: In the present study, we reviewed thirty-three patients (mean age 64.

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is a proven treatment for coronary artery disease. History of a ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is considered an independent risk factor for CABG irrespective of timing for an emergency or elective surgery. Patients with STEMI are candidates for both On-pump and Off-pump CABG procedures.

Methods: The prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Karachi, from March 2021 to February 2022, and comprised patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis detected on echocardiography. The best end-diastole parasternal long axis and apical four-chamber views were acquired and Mitral leaflet separation was measured as the distance between the inner edges of the tip of mitral leaflets.

Background: Iron deficiency is a common comorbidity in heart failure (HF) and is independently associated with a worse quality-of-life and exercise capacity, as well as increased risk of hospitalization, regardless of anemia status. Although international guidelines have provided recommendations for the management of iron deficiency in patients with HF, guidelines in Asia are less established, and practical use of guidelines for management of iron deficiency is limited in the region.
Methods: A panel comprising cardiologists from China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand convened to share insights and provide guidance for the optimal management of iron deficiency in patients with HF, tailored for the Asian community.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are more likely to have complications due to cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Medicine and Nephrology, Chittagong Medical College (CMC), Chittagong, Bangladesh from June to December, 2014 and was performed to estimate the risk of cardiovascular events according to Framingham's Risk Score of CKD patients. In this research, 100 patients who was diagnosed as CKD and admitted in the Chittagong Medical College Hospital were enrolled.

Background: The use of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after coronary revascularization for left-main disease is still debated. The study aimed to characterize patients who received dual versus single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) for unprotected left-main disease and compare the outcomes of those patients.
Results: This multicenter retrospective cohort study included 551 patients who were grouped into 2 groups: patients who received SAPT (n = 150) and those who received DAPT (n = 401).

Objective: As COVID-19 continues to affect the global population, it is crucial to study the impact of the disease in vulnerable populations. This study of a diverse, international cohort aims to provide timely, experiential data on the course of disease in paediatric patients with congenital heart disease (CHD).
Methods: Data were collected by capitalising on two pre-existing CHD registries, the International Quality Improvement Collaborative for Congenital Heart Disease: and the Congenital Cardiac Catheterization Project on Outcomes.

Transfusion-related complications and lack of resources in low-to-middle-income countries have led to a search for novel therapies to reduce the need for blood transfusions in patients with β-thalassemia. Hydroxyurea (HU) has demonstrated promising outcomes; additionally, thalidomide has also shown improvement in hemoglobin (Hb) levels for patients with β-thalassemia in some studies. This study presents the findings of a single-arm nonrandomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of combination therapy of HU and thalidomide in children with β-thalassemia.

NSTEMI patients, in comparison to STEMI patients, are more at risk of bleeding, access site complication and MACE after PCI during index hospitalization. Because they get, multiple adjuvant anti-thrombotic agents before PCI than do the STEMI patients undergoing primary PCI. Transradial access (TRA) is proven to decrease those adverse in-hospital outcomes compared to transfemoral access (TFA) in STEMI patients.

Cardiac amyloidosis is a rare disease which is under diagnosed in this region. This study was aimed to assess the clinical presentation, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging findings and prognosis of patients with cardiac amyloidosis in Pakistani population presenting to a tertiary care setting. A total of eight patients were included with the confirmed diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis on CMR, after reviewing the CMR data of Aga Khan University Hospital from January 2011 to August 2019.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are a significant cause of premature deaths worldwide. Since there is no specific treatment for reducing AAA progression, it is crucial to understand the pathogenesis leading to aneurysm wall weakening/remodeling and identify new proteins involved in this process which could subsequently serve as novel therapeutic targets. In this study, we analyzed the presence of the hypoxia-related proteins carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX), hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α), and AKT as the key molecule in the phosphoinositide-3-kinase pathway in the AAA wall.

The simulator has the following characteristics: 1) the simulator is portable and easy to assemble and disassemble, 2) the cardiac portion is created using a 3D-printer, based on patient computed tomography data, 3) the simulator uses a foot-operated water pump to create pulsatile flow, and 4) the fossa ovalis in the atrial septum of the heart model is made of a thin polyurethane membrane and is interchangeable. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of this novel simulator for training in PTMC using the Inoue balloon in developing countries.

Objective: Myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is confounded by the extracardiac artefacts cause by hepatobiliary clearance of the radiotracers. Various techniques have been evaluated to lessen those artefacts. In this study, we endeavoured to determine the effect of carbonated water in reducing such infracardiac artefact so to improve MPI image quality, sensitivity and specificity.

Background With the emergence of new technologies to stabilize the heart off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB), there is an increasing trend that is being observed throughout the world. In certain circumstances, OPCAB needs to be converted to on-pump CABG (ONCAB). In this study, we aim to identify certain risk factors mandating conversions and their associated short-term outcomes.

Introduction Minimally invasive double valve replacement (DVR) surgery through a small transverse anterior thoracotomy is an alternate technique to sternotomy for concomitant aortic and mitral valve (AVR, MVR) surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in-hospital and early outcomes of direct vision minimal invasive double valve surgery (DVMI-DVR) at a tertiary care cardiac center of a developing country. Methods This study was conducted at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases Karachi, Pakistan from January 2018 to September 2018.
