Purpose: Currently available human papillomavirus (HPV) detection devices are expensive, requiring a continuous power supply, high-priced reagents, skilled laboratory personnel, and infrastructure. These make it difficult to implement primary HPV screening in high-risk (HR) populations, particularly in low-income settings such as in India. The objective of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of a point-of-care, portable, battery-operated device called Truenat, which detects 4 HR HPV genotypes (16, 18, 31, and 45), as a potentially cost-effective alternative to conventional HPV diagnostic tests.

mtDNA is the closed circular, ds-DNA present in mitochondria of eukaryotic cells and are inherited maternally. Besides being the power house of the cell, mitochondria are also responsible for the regulation of redox homeostasis, signaling, metabolism, immunity, survival and apoptosis. Lack of a on mtDNA variations and cancers encouraged us to perform the present study.

Objective: Despite a reduction in maternal mortality in recent years, a high rate of anaemia and other nutrient inadequacies during pregnancy pose a serious threat to mothers and their children in the Global South. Using the framework of the WHO-Commission on Social Determinants of Health, this study examines the socioeconomic, programmatic and contextual factors associated with the consumption of iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets/syrup for at least 100 d (IFA100) and receiving supplementary food (SF) by pregnant women in India.

Design: We analysed a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of over 190 898 ever-married women aged 15-49 years who were interviewed as part of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) conducted during 2015-16, who had at least one live birth preceding 5 years of the survey.

There is a paucity of trained cytopathologists in low-resource settings for effective cervical cancer screening. There has been no documented report of the impact of a dedicated training program in cervical cytology on pathologists' knowledge and skill in this field. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the regularly conducted training workshops on the attending pathologists' knowledge, practice, and skills in cervicovaginal smear reporting.

Fine needle aspiration (FNA), the cornerstone of diagnosis in thyroid swellings, fails to render a definitive diagnosis in about 20% to 30% of cases that are reported as indeterminate on cytology. Since the clinical management in thyroid rests on the risk of malignancy (ROM) in a given nodule, this distinction between "benign" and "possibly malignant" assumes paramount clinical importance. Over the last two decades, tremendous progress has been achieved in our understanding of the molecular basis of thyroid pathologies leading to identification of several genetic alterations that could potentially be exploited for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic purposes.

India's cervical cancer screening program was launched in 2016. We evaluated baseline facility readiness using nationally representative data from the 2012-13 District Level Household and Facility Survey on 4 tiers of the public health care system - 18,367 sub-health centres (SHCs), 8540 primary health centres (PHCs), 4810 community health centres and 1540 district/sub-divisional hospitals. To evaluate facility readiness we used the Improving Data for Decision Making in Global Cervical Cancer Programmes toolkit on six domains - potential staffing, infrastructure, equipment and supplies, infection prevention, medicines and laboratory testing, and data management.

Whole slide imaging (WSI), ever since its first introduction about two decades ago, has been validated for a number of applications in the field of pathology. The recent approval of US FDA to a WSI system for use in primary surgical pathology diagnosis has opened avenues for wider acceptance and application of this technology in routine practice. The ongoing technological advances in digital scanners, image visualization methods, and the integration of artificial intelligence-derived algorithms with these systems provide opportunities of its newer applications.

Objective: To study the temporal trends in cytologic detection of cervical epithelial cell abnormalities (ECA) and to evaluate the impact of introduction of endocervical brush sampling on detection of ECA.

Study Design: This was a cross-sectional study of conventional cervical smears collected over a 13 year period (2006-2018). The study was divided into two time periods (TP)-TP1 (2006-2014, 67,437 smears) using only extended tip Ayre's spatula and TP2 (2015-2018; 36,746 smears) when Cytobrush Papsmear kit (Ayre's spatula + endocervical brush) was used.

Introduction: Various primary studies and systematic reviews have been conducted to explain the association between smokeless tobacco and oral cancer. This study aims to consolidate and summarize the risk estimates from various systematic reviews with or without meta-analysis to provide the spectrum of estimates on the association between smokeless tobacco use and oral cancer.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was done on various databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, IndMED, and TOXLINE) by two of the authors independently.

Exosomal miRNAs in hepatitis B virus related liver disease: a new hope for biomarker.

Gut Pathog

April 2020

Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry, National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Noida, Uttar Pradesh 201301 India.

The World Health Organisation, in its 2019 progress report on HIV, viral hepatitis and STDs indicates that 257 million people are afflicted with chronic HBV infections, of which, 1 million patients lose their lives every year due to HBV related chronic liver diseases including serious complications such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The course of HBV infection and associated liver injury depend on several host factors, genetic variability of the virus, and the host viral interplay. The challenge of medical science is the early diagnosis/identification of the potential for development of fatal complications like liver cirrhosis and HCC so that timely medical intervention can improve the chances of survival.

This study examines the socioeconomic determinants of dual use of smoked and smokeless tobacco (SLT) in India between 2009-10 and 2016-17. Data from two rounds of the nationally representative cross-sectional Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) conducted in 2009-10 and 2016-17 was used. Complete sample size from both rounds of survey covering 143,333 individuals (GATS I: 69,296 and GATS II: 74,037) from 153,239 households (GATS I: 76,069 and GATS II: 77,170) included in the study.

The request form accompanying any sample to a clinical laboratory constitutes an important communication tool between the clinician and the laboratory personnel. Much has been written about the inadequacy of pertinent clinical data on the request slips for hematology and biochemistry tests and its impact on the subsequent test interpretation and error liability. Although the cytology laboratories, including those performing cervical cytology, have to deal with a similar problem of lack of clinical information critical to the proper interpretation of cytomorphologic features, the issue has not been attended to or reported adequately in the literature.

Gall bladder cancer (GBC) is the most common malignancy of biliary tract cancer associated with high mortality rate and poor prognosis due to lack of suitable biomarkers. In this study, we explored the structural and functional effects of different missense mutations occurs in SMAD4 that was associated with the development of GBC. We utilized methods to predict the harmful effects of nonsynonymous missense mutations and monitored the stability of protein.

Serum prostatic specific antigen (PSA) and serum testosterone levels share an undefined relationship with each other, with many conflicting studies showing both positive and negative correlation between them. Our aim was to assess association between serum PSA and serum testosterone in healthy men with normal testosterone levels and men with partial androgen deficiency (PADAM). A cross sectional study was conducted at a teaching hospital setting where serum testosterone and aging male symptom scale (AMS) scores along with PSA were studied in 255 men (> 50 years) with and without PADAM.
