Surgical Site Infection (SSI) has an enormous impact on patients' quality of life. SSIs further stresses on allocation of different health care resources and contribute significantly in terms of high cost of care. This was a prospective study carried out in tertiary care hospitals of Karachi, Pakistan, involving abdominal surgeries and few other surgeries, in patients having 20 years of age and above, were admitted from June 2016 to May 2017.

This case series describes the wide spectrum of clinical presentation, laboratory findings, and morbidity/mortality associated with dengue fever in hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, treated in a dengue endemic region. The risk of acquiring viral infections increases manifold after transplant due to the severely immunocompromised state amid conditioning toxicity and immunosuppressive therapy. The classical warning signs of dengue viremia are often masked in posttransplant patients, leading to a missed diagnosis of dengue and grave consequences observed in some of the patients.

Background: All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is an indispensable part of the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). Although, mild cutaneous toxicities like mucocutaneous xerosis, rash, and pruritus are well reported, ATRA associated severe dermatological toxicities are extremely rare. ATRA is primary metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzyme system, and triazole antifungals are notorious for their strong inhibitory effect on CYP450.

Congenital fibrinogen deficiency (CFD) is a rare bleeding disorder caused by mutations in FGA, FGB, and FGG. We sought to comprehensively characterize patients with CFD using PRO-RBDD (Prospective Rare Bleeding Disorders Database). Clinical phenotypes, laboratory, and genetic features were investigated using retrospective data from the PRO-RBDD.

There is uncontrolled activation of histiocytes and phagocytic macrophages, resulting in excess secretions of cytokines that manifest into systemic hyperinflammation affecting several organs. HLH may present as primary due to underlying familial or genetic causes or as secondary due to underlying conditions such as malignancies, infections, or autoimmune disorders.

Background and objective Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT) provides curative treatment for several hematological illnesses. In this study, we evaluated the impact of ABO compatibility and incompatibility on outcomes and complications related to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) performed for various hematological disorders at our center. Methodology This was a retrospective, single-center, cohort study in which patients were categorized according to the ABO match and mismatch status.

Objective: This study aimed to compare the reticulated platelet count between patients having thrombocytopenia secondary to autoimmune destruction (immune thrombocytopenia {ITP}), bone marrow failure, and healthy controls who presented to a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2021 to October 2022 in the Department of Hematology, National Institute of Blood Disease (NIBD) Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, that involved examining three groups: 30 patients with immune thrombocytopenia, 30 patients with thrombocytopenia secondary to reduced production from bone marrow, and 30 healthy controls. The study utilized the Sysmex XN-1000 (Hyogo, Japan: Sysmex Corporation) automated hematology analyzer to perform a complete blood count (CBC) test.

Introduction: Aplastic anemia (AA) is characterized by pancytopenia and hypocellular marrow in the absence of an abnormal infiltrate or increase in reticulin fibrosis. The diagnosis of AA is challenging at times due to decreased cellularity and overlapping morphological features with other bone marrow failure syndromes. Hepatitis-associated aplastic anemia (HAAA) is a rare variant in which patients typically present with jaundice and hepatitis followed by pancytopenia almost within 6 months.

The successful outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) in aplastic anemia patients is driven by suitable donor selection, appropriate conditioning regimen, early intervention, and optimal supportive care after transplant. Pakistan, being a developing country, faces grave economic challenges due to meager health care budget; therefore, cost constraints remain the foremost impediment in optimizing transplant facilities for socioeconomically deprived patients. We conducted a single-center retrospective analysis of aplastic anemia patients ( = 130), who received matched sibling donor transplants from 2011 to 2019, treated with either fludarabine/cyclophosphamide (Flu/Cy) or antithymocyte globulin/cyclophosphamide (ATG/CY) conditioning regimen.

Matching of extended red cell antigens of Kell, MNS, Kidd, and Duffy can decrease the risk of alloimmunization. Hence, in this study, the frequencies of the extended red cell phenotypes were explored.
