Lactoferrin (Lf) is a positively charged iron-binding glycoprotein that has piqued the scientific community's interest due to its pleiotropic behavior, exhibiting a wide range of biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anticancer effects. This narrative review explores the current understanding of Lf's role in cancer, focusing on the endogenously expressed human full-length and ΔLf isoforms, and the effects of treatment with exogenous human and bovine Lf. We evaluated and compared the mechanisms by which Lf influences tumorigenesis and cancer progression, focusing on its impact on key processes such as cell growth, apoptosis, angiogenesis, cell migration, and invasiveness.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from amphibians represent a promising source of novel antibacterial agents due to their potent and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, which positions them as valid alternatives to conventional antibiotics. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms through which amphibian-derived AMPs exert their effects against bacterial pathogens. We focus on the identification of bacterial protein targets implicated in the action of these peptides and on biological processes altered by the effect of AMPs.

The endocrine system and particularly thyroid hormones regulate almost all physiological processes in a timely manner in all vertebrates, from fish to reptiles to mammals, so risk assessment of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is extremely important given their persistent presence in all environmental matrices. Resorcinol, as well as nonylphenol, octylphenol, and bisphenol A, F, S, are non-Halogenated Phenolic (non-HPCs) Chemicals known as EDCs. Resorcinol is a particular example in that most studies are based exclusively on humans while animal studies are few and often inadequate.

Zebrafish have a lifelong cardiac regenerative ability after damage, whereas mammals lose this capacity during early postnatal development. This study investigated whether the declining expression of growth factors during postnatal mammalian development contributes to the decrease of cardiomyocyte regenerative potential. Besides confirming the proliferative ability of neuregulin 1 (NRG1), interleukin (IL)1b, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand (RANKL), insulin growth factor (IGF)2, and IL6, we identified other potential pro-regenerative factors, with BMP7 exhibiting the most pronounced efficacy.

A strong correlation between the occurrence of various pathological conditions and intestinal dysbiosis is supported by a range of strong evidence. Vice versa, many pathologies have been shown, in turn, to be responsible for alterations in the gut microbiota, a condition that can worsen illness outcomes and response to therapies. For these reasons, great efforts have been made, and studies are still ongoing, to elucidate the mechanisms underlying gut microbiota alterations and to search for pharmacologic or other strategies that can effectively restore the gut microbiota.

Transmission electron microscopy and the use of glutaraldehyde-osmium fixation allow to distinguish norepinephrine from epinephrine granules in the adrenochromaffin cells, a difficult distinction with histochemical methods if both types of granules are present in the same cell.
