Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases. AD pathogenesis is associated with increased oxidative stress, impairment of the skin barrier, and activation of the immune response. Rosmarinic acid (RA), a caffeic acid ester, is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Cellulosic biomass hydrolysates are rich in glucose and xylose, but most microorganisms, including , are unable to utilize xylose effectively. To address this limitation, we engineered a strain optimized for xylose metabolism through the xylose oxidoreductase pathway and promoter optimization. A promoter library with varying strengths was used to fine-tune the expression levels of the , , and genes, resulting in a strain with a strong promoter for and weaker promoters for and .

Two novel bacterial strains, 273M-4 and Sam97, were isolated from seawater in the Yellow Sea, Muan-gun, South Korea, and identified as members of the genus Thalassotalea. Both strains were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-flagellated, and oxidase- and catalase-positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains 273M-4 and Sam97 were most closely related to Thalassotalea ponticola KCTC 42155, with sequence similarities of 97.

Herein, we present a significant advancement in long-term cryopreservation techniques for microalgae species using a combination of linear polyglycerol (PG) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The technique was tested on three species: , , and , which showed long-term viability and recovery rates superior to those when treated with a traditional cryoprotectant only. While DMSO alone enabled high cell recovery rates for all species after 1 week of cryopreservation, the rates for some of them dropped below 50% after 26 weeks of cryopreservation.

Isoflavone-enriched soybean leaves (IESLs) were processed for drying, steaming, and fermentation, and bioactive compounds and biological activities were analyzed. During food processing, the content of fatty acids, water-soluble vitamins, total phenolics, total flavonoids, and isoflavone-aglycones increased from dried IESLs (DrIESLs) to fermented IESLs (FeIESLs). Especially, oleic acid (53.

This study evaluated the effects of Parachlorella sp. KSN1 (PA) supplementation on the gut microbiota and intestinal immunity of broilers of different ages. A total of 180 Ross 308 broiler chicks were weighed and divided into early (1 to 10 days post hatch) and late (11 to 28 days post hatch) periods, with six replicates of 10 chicks per cage assigned to two dietary groups.

The epigean and subterranean spiders of the genus Cybaeus L. Koch, 1868 are distributed in the Holarctic, and are highly diversified in western North America and Japan. More than 100 species have been described from the Japanese Archipelago and several species assemblages have also been recognised among the Japanese Cybaeus based on their morphological similarities.

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a significant challenge to the treatment of bacterial infections, necessitating the development of novel antibiotics or strategies to preserve the efficacy of existing ones. This study investigates the role of oxidative stress modulation in the pathogenicity of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains, aiming to identify potential avenues for new drug design. Specifically, the anti-biofilm effects of crude extracts and fractions from seven halophyte species native to Jeju Island, South Korea, were evaluated against ATCC 17978.

Cyanobacteria from the orders Nostocales and certain Stigonematales form akinetes, spore-like dormant cells that allow them to survive adverse environmental conditions. Temperature is known to be one of the key factors affecting akinete formation, but there is currently little known about akinete formation during cell growth over a wide range of temperature conditions and its relation to the overall survival strategy of cyanobacteria. Therefore, in the current study, we conducted a temperature-controlled experiment to analyze the akinete formation of a harmful cyanobacterium Dolichospurmum circinale using a growth chamber.

Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panels are powerful tools for assessing the genetic population structure and dispersal of fishes and can enhance management practices for commercial, recreational and subsistence mixed-stock fisheries. Arctic Char (Salvelinus alpinus), Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) are among the most harvested and consumed fish species in Northern Indigenous communities in Canada, contributing significantly to food security, culture, tradition and economy. However, genetic resources supporting Indigenous fisheries have not been widely accessible to northern communities (e.

Nine previously undescribed (1-9) and seven known (10-16) cycloartane-type triterpenoids were isolated and characterized from Combretum quadrangulare Kurz using physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The absolute configurations of these compounds were determined through modified Mosher's method and quantum chemical calculation of electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra. Their inhibitory activities against PCSK9 secretion were assessed, and a plausible structure-activity relationship was delineated.

Limnophilinae crane flies belonging to the genus Bergroth, 1891 of the Korean Peninsula were studied starting from 1937, but only one species (Alexander, 1923) has been recorded from North Korea so far. The genus was unknown from South Korea. Four species were found during our studies on the Peninsula, one of them from Jeju Island described as new, Podenas, Three species are recorded from both northern and southern parts of the Peninsula.
