Based on the characteristics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that absorb light in the near-infrared region, we have developed a method to quantify the biodistribution of CNTs in mouse tissues such as the liver, lungs and spleen. By using this method, the kinetic biodistribution of single-walled CNTs (SWNTs) after intravenous injection into mice for 60 days has been successfully investigated. The results show that the biodistribution of CNTs was diameter-dependent by comparing two different diameters of SWNTs.
