Despite aggressive therapeutic regimens, glioblastoma (GBM) represents a deadly brain tumor with significant aggressiveness, radioresistance and chemoresistance, leading to dismal prognosis. Hypoxic microenvironment, which characterizes GBM, is associated with reduced therapeutic effectiveness. Moreover, current irradiation approaches are limited by uncertain tumor delineation and severe side effects that comprehensively lead to unsuccessful treatment and to a worsening of the quality of life of GBM patients.

Introduction: Mediastinal lymphoma (ML) is a solid malignancy affecting young patients. Modern combined treatments allow obtaining good survival probability, together with a long life expectancy, and therefore with the need to minimize treatment-related toxicities. We quantified the expected toxicity risk for different organs and endpoints in ML patients treated with intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) at our centre, accounting also for uncertainties related to variable RBE.

Using a customized time-domain ellipsometer operating in the THz range, the molecular dynamics of a liquid binary solution based on water and isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol) is investigated. The setup is capable of detecting small changes in the optical properties of the mixture within a single measurement. The complex dielectric response of samples with different concentrations is studied through the direct measurement of the ellipsometric parameters.

Nowadays, in vitro three-dimensional (3D) neuronal networks are becoming a consolidated experimental model to overcome most of the intrinsic limitations of bi-dimensional (2D) assemblies. In the 3D environment, experimental evidence revealed a wider repertoire of activity patterns, characterized by a modulation of the bursting features, than the one observed in 2D cultures. However, it is not totally clear and understood what pushes the neuronal networks towards different dynamical regimes.

Silicon carbide (SiC), thanks to its material properties similar to diamond and its industrial maturity close to silicon, represents an ideal candidate for several harsh-environment sensing applications, where sensors must withstand high particle irradiation and/or high operational temperatures. In this study, to explore the radiation tolerance of SiC sensors to multiple damaging processes, both at room and high temperature, we used the Ion Microprobe Chamber installed at the Ruđer Bošković Institute (Zagreb, Croatia), which made it possible to expose small areas within the same device to different ion beams, thus evaluating and comparing effects within a single device. The sensors tested, developed jointly by STLab and SenSiC, are PIN diodes with ultrathin free-standing membranes, realized by means of a recently developed doping-selective electrochemical etching.

The creatine precursor Guanidinoacetic Acid (GAA) accumulates in the genetic deficiency of the GuanidinoAcetate Methyl Transferase (GAMT) enzyme and it is believed to cause the seizures that often occur in this condition. However, evidence that it is indeed epileptogenic is scarce and we previously found that it does not cause neuronal hyperexcitation in in vitro brain slices. Here, we used Micro-Electrode Arrays (MEAs) to further investigate the electrophysiological effects of its acute and chronic administration in the networks of cultured neurons, either neocortical or hippocampal.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is the most widely used laser powder-bed fusion (L-PBF) technology for the additive manufacturing (AM) of parts from metallic powders. The surface quality of the SLM parts is highly dependent on many factors and process parameters. These factors include the powder grain size, the layer thickness, and the building angle.

Background: Internal dosimetry has an increasing role in the planning and verification of nuclear medicine therapies with radiopharmaceuticals. Dose Point Kernels (DPKs), quantifying the energy deposition all around a point source, in a homogenous medium, are extensively used for 3D dosimetry and nowadays are mostly evaluated by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. To our knowledge, DPK for beta emitters is estimated neglecting the continuous photon emission due to the Internal Bremsstrahlung (IB), whose contribution to the absorbed dose can be relevant beyond the maximum range of betas, as evidenced in recent works.

Background/aim: One of the main limitations of standard imaging modalities is microscopic tumor extension, which is often difficult to detect on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (CT) in the early stages of the tumor. (68)Ga-DOTA(0)-Phe(1)-Tyr(3)-octreotide positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT) has shown efficacy in detecting lesions previously undiagnosed by neuroimaging modalities, such as MRI or CT, and has enabled the detection of multiple benign tumors (like multiple meningiomas in a patient presenting with a single lesion on MRI) or additional secondary metastatic locations.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data from the Cannizzaro Hospital on brain and body Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT "incidentalomas", defined as tumors missed on CT or MRI scans, but detected on Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT scans.

This study reports on a novel, flexible, proton beam detector based on mixed 3D-2D perovskite films deposited by solution onto thin plastic foils. The 3D-2D mixture allows to obtain micrometer-thick and highly uniform films that constitute the detector's active layer. The devices demonstrate excellent flexibility with stable electric transport properties down to a bending radius of 3.

We present a study on the radiation tolerance and timing properties of 3D diamond detectors fabricated by laser engineering on synthetic Chemical Vapor Deposited (CVD) plates. We evaluated the radiation hardness of the sensors using Charge Collection Efficiency (CCE) measurements after neutron fluences up to 1016 n/cm2 (1 MeV equivalent.) The radiation tolerance is significantly higher when moving from standard planar architecture to 3D architecture and increases with the increasing density of the columnar electrodes.

Neuroprostheses are neuroengineering devices that have an interface with the nervous system and supplement or substitute functionality in people with disabilities. In the collective imagination, neuroprostheses are mostly used to restore sensory or motor capabilities, but in recent years, new devices directly acting at the brain level have been proposed. In order to design the next-generation of neuroprosthetic devices for brain repair, we foresee the increasing exploitation of closed-loop systems enabled with neuromorphic elements due to their intrinsic energy efficiency, their capability to perform real-time data processing, and of mimicking neurobiological computation for an improved synergy between the technological and biological counterparts.

One method for finding reliable and cost-effective solutions for designing radioisotope production systems is represented by the "digital twin" philosophy of design. Looking at cyclotron solid targets, uncertainties of the particle beam, material composition and geometry play a crucial role in determining the results. The difference between what has been designed and what can be effectively manufactured, where processes such as electroplating are poorly controllable and generate large non-uniformities in deposition, must also be considered.
