Many applications in laboratory, industrial and R&D practice involve utilization of standard chemical vapor mixtures, therefore their availability, ease of preparation and reliability play a crucial role. This work is presenting a new instrumentation based on the innovated dynamic preparation method using the injection of liquid sample, fast evaporation, and uniform mixing with carrier gas. The combination of precise syringe drives, quantitative evaporation and controlled flow of carrier gas provides very high level of accuracy and stability of the generation process.

A collection of personal protective equipment (PPE), suitable for use in case of accident in nuclear facilities or radiological emergencies, was gathered at the National Institute for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Protection, Czech Republic. The shielding characteristics of the various PPE materials were measured via narrow geometry spectral attenuation measurements with point radionuclide sources covering a broad range of photon energies. Photon relative penetration and attenuation for relevant energies of the spectra were the principal experimentally determined quantities for tested PPE.

Chemical warfare agents are still a threat to humanity despite the existence of a ban on their production and use. There are many new materials that have been experimentally verified to be effective in degrading and eliminating various chemical warfare agents; however, clay minerals still remain very effective, environmentally friendly and not expensive. Vermiculites modified with hexadecylpyridinium, hexadecyltrimethylammonium and tetramethylammonium cations were used for static sorption of vapours of two simulants of nerve agents: dimethyl methyl phosphonate and diethyl ethyl phosphonate.

The activity size distribution of the Equilibrium-Equivalent Concentration (EER) of 222Rn is one of the most important parameters for the estimation of radiation dose by inhalation of radon decay products. A series of measurements of the EER activity size distribution were performed by the screen diffusion battery in Radon-Aerosol chamber (10 m3) at the National Institute for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Protection (SUJCHBO). These measurements were performed at different levels of radon concentration.

Radioactive aerosol particles represent a serious risk for people facing the consequences of nuclear accident of any kind. The first responders to emergency situation need to be protected by personal protective equipment which includes radiation protection suit supplemented with gas mask. The purpose of this work is to estimate the dose to the organs of responder's body as a result of radionuclide deposition in the filtration unit of the gas mask.

A collection of personal radiation shielding protective clothing, suitable for use in case of accidents in nuclear facilities or radiological emergency situations involving radioactive agents, was gathered and tested at the Nuclear Protection Department of the National Institute for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Protection, Czech Republic. Attenuating qualities of shielding layers in individual protective clothing were tested via spectra measurement of x and gamma rays, penetrating them. The rays originated from different radionuclide point sources, the gamma ray energies of which cover a broad energy range.

For experiments with dispersed radioactive aerosols in a radon-aerosol chamber (RAC), it is desirable to know the activity of the radioactive aerosols applied in the RAC. A COLIBRI TTC survey metre with an SABG-15+ probe (Canberra, USA) was purchased for this purpose. The probe is designed for surface contamination measurements, and it is intended to measure the activity of aerosols deposited on the filters during experiments in the RAC.

Exposure to radon and its decay products is one of the three parts that create the total effective dose of uranium miners. Photons from gamma radiation and exposition to long-lived alpha emitters which are members of uranium family are the other two parts. The monthly total effective dose of uranium miners in mine Rozna I (Czech republic) is determined by the personal dosemeter ALGADE, which ensures the continual individual monitoring of all three parts.

At least 10% of inhabitants in the Czech Republic are supplied with water from private sources (private wells, boreholes). With the increasing cost of water, the number of people using their own sources of drinking water will be likely to increase. According to the Decree of the State Office for Nuclear Safety about the Radiation Protection 307/2002 as amended by Decree 499/2005, the guideline limit for the supplied drinking water ('drinking water for public supply') for radon concentration is 50 Bq·l(-1).

Sorption efficiencies of modified montmorillonite and vermiculite of their mono ionic Na and organic HDTMA and HDP forms were studied against chemical and biological warfare agents such as yperite and selected bacterial strains. Yperite interactions with modified clay minerals were observed through its capture in low-density polyethylene foil-modified clay composites by measuring yperite gas permeation with using chemical indication and gas chromatography methods. The antibacterial activities of synthetized organoclays were tested against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species in minimum inhibitory concentration tests.
