In this work, we compare nanoaggregation driven by pH-induced micellization (PIM) and by the standard solvent displacement (SD) method on a series of pH-, light-, and thermosensitive amphiphilic block copolymers. Specifically, we investigate poly(HIABMA)--poly(OEGMA) and poly(HIABMA)--poly(DEGMA--OEGMA), where HIABMA = [(hydroxyimino)aldehyde]butyl methacrylate, OEGMA = oligo(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate, and DEGMA = di(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate. The weakly acidic HIA group (p ≈ 8) imparts stability to micelles at neutral pH, unlike most of the pH-responsive copolymers investigated in the literature.

Preparation and characterization of a block-like l,d-octapeptide-dextran conjugate DEX-(l-Val-d-Val) self-assembling into nanowire structures is reported. The conjugate was prepared by solid phase click-chemistry on an alkyne group N-terminus functionalized peptide with a regularly alternating enantiomeric sequence. Low molecular weight dextran (X = 29) with moderately low dispersity (1.

Despite Italy banning use and production of asbestos in 1992, it continues to represent a risk to human health due to its permanence in the places where it was located. The aim of this work is to estimate how many schools in Rome (Italy) have asbestos containing materials (ACM), and to assess whether the location, condition and nature of ACM can influence the level of risk for student health. 3,672 schools were contacted and 1,451 participated to asbestos survey.

Amphipathic peptides are attractive building blocks for the preparation of self-assembling, bio-inspired, and stimuli responsive nanomaterials with pharmaceutical interest. The bioavailability of these materials can be improved with the insertion of d amino acid residues to avoid fast proteolysis in vivo. With this knowledge, a new lauroyl peptide consisting of a sequence of glycine, glycine, d-serine, and d-lysine was designed.

There is a growing interest in therapeutically targeting the inflammatory response that underlies age-related chronic diseases including obesity and type 2 diabetes. Through integrative small RNA sequencing, we show the presence of conserved plant miR159a and miR156c in dried nuts having high complementarity with the mammalian TNF receptor superfamily member 1a (Tnfrsf1a) transcript. We detected both miR159a and miR156c in exosome-like nut nanovesicles (NVs) and demonstrated that such NVs reduce Tnfrsf1a protein and dampen TNF-α signaling pathway in adipocytes.

Objective: Biosolubility is an important parameter in the understanding of mechanisms involved in pulmonary toxicity of fibrous materials. It can be studied in vitro using models of simulated lung fluids and observing the loss of structural molecules, expressed as dissolution constant (K). The aim of this paper was the study of dissolution behaviour of four wools belonging to high temperature insulation wools (HTIW) in saline solutions simulating lung fluids.

Preparation and characterization of a pH and thermosensitive linear l,d-octapeptide-poly(dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate) ((l-Val-d-Val)-PDMAEMA) conjugate is reported. The hydrophobic uncharged linear (l-Val-d-Val) octapeptide was designed to self-assemble in nanotubes by exploiting the tubular self-assembling properties of linear peptides with regularly alternating enantiomeric sequences. pH and thermosensitive PDMAEMA was obtained by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP).

A method is described for the quantification of the sp, sp and intermediate hybridizations in several carbon (C) material samples. Electron energy-loss near-edge spectra were acquired using fast electrons (120keV) in an electron microscope in nanobeam configuration under the so-called "magic-angle" condition, and were analysed to extract the sp and sp fractions, and identify the possible mixed sp hybridizations. The method consists in projecting the unknown spectra on a basis made up of pure sp and sp spectra, obtained under the same experimental conditions from graphite and diamond crystals, respectively.
