Seasonal snow in the extratropical Andes is a primary water source for major rivers supplying water for drinking, agriculture, and hydroelectric power in Central Chile. Here, we used estimates from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to analyze changes in snow cover extent over the period 2001-2022 in a total of 18 watersheds spanning approximately 1,100 km across the Chilean Andes (27-36°S). We found that the annual snow cover extent is receding in the watersheds analyzed at an average pace of approximately 19% per decade.

Maternal urinary nitrophenol concentrations are reportedly associated with preterm birth and foetal/offspring development delay, but the evidence is still inconclusive. We investigated the association between maternal urinary concentrations of 4-nitrophenol (4NP) and 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol (3M4NP) and adverse birth outcomes, as well as offspring neurodevelopment delay, defined using the Ages and Stages Questionnaires at 4 years of age, stratified by offspring sex. Despite numerous studies, the associations between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure and various lipid levels in pregnant women remain ambiguous, especially concerning the association with cord blood lipids. This analysis included 20,960 pregnant women enrolled in the Japan Environment and Children's Study, recruited between 2011 and 2014. Recent studies have revealed that biotic interactions in ecological communities vary over time, possibly mediating community responses to anthropogenic disturbances. This study investigated the heterogeneity of such variability within a real community and its impact on population stability in the face of pesticide application, particularly focusing on density-dependence of the interaction effect. Using outdoor mesocosms with a freshwater community, we found considerable heterogeneity in density-dependent interaction variability among links in the same community.
