Methane (CH) spatial distribution and its trends in the Atlantic-Mediterranean transition region of southwestern Europe were studied using TROPOMI and GOSAT observations. TROPOMI XCH provided insights into the distribution across the entire Iberian Peninsula, highlighting the high XCH mixing ratios in the two main valleys and the southern sub-plateau, characterized by agricultural and livestock activities. The marine-continental region in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula was identified as a major CH hot spot.

Variational autoencoder architectures have the potential to develop reduced-order models for chaotic fluid flows. We propose a method for learning compact and near-orthogonal reduced-order models using a combination of a β-variational autoencoder and a transformer, tested on numerical data from a two-dimensional viscous flow in both periodic and chaotic regimes. The β-variational autoencoder is trained to learn a compact latent representation of the flow velocity, and the transformer is trained to predict the temporal dynamics in latent-space.

The correct assessment of the radiological hazard from radon and daughters, external and internal doses, residence times and equilibrium factors, implies the need to properly determine Rn (radon), Rn (thoron) and their respective short-lived progenies (Pb and Bi, and Pb and Bi, respectively), where the precise measurements of both progenies are quite complex due to their very short half-lives. A composite optical bench made up of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) skin and aluminum honeycomb has been developed for the Tunable Magnetograph instrument (TuMag) for the SUNRISE III mission within the NASA Long Duration Balloon Program. This optical bench has been designed to meet lightweight and low sensitivity to thermal gradient requirements, resulting in a low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE). In addition to the flight model, a breadboard model identical to the flight one has been manufactured, including embedded fiber Bragg temperature and strain sensors.

Wind speeds measured by the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover in Jezero crater were fitted as a Weibull distribution. InSight wind data acquired in Elysium Planitia were also used to contextualize observations. The La Palma 2021 volcanic eruption was the first subaerial eruption in a 50-year period in the Canary Islands (Spain), emitting ~1.8 Tg of sulphur dioxide (SO) into the troposphere over nearly 3 months (19 September-13 December 2021), exceeding the total anthropogenic SO emitted from the 27 European Union countries in 2019. Observations of the South Polar Residual Cap suggest a possible erosion of the cap, leading to an increase of the global mass of the atmosphere. We test this assumption by making the first comparison between Viking 1 and InSight surface pressure data, which were recorded 40 years apart. Two radon measurement stations located to the north and south of a NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) repository of phosphogypsum (southwest of Europe) were used to monitor radon behavior during 2018. This setup aimed to identify the influence of the NORM repository on each station and use radon levels as a marker of atmospheric transport in the local area.

This work presents an experimental study on the effects of gamma radiation on Long Period Fiber Gratings (LPFGs) in a low-dose test campaign to evaluate their eventual degradation. The study was carried out with standard single-mode fibers where the grating was inscribed using the Electric-Arc Discharge (EAD) technique.
