Two regimens of albendazole emulsion (AbzE), a novel formulation, were used in the treatment of 264 cases of hepatic cystic echinococcosis. Objective: To submit a proposal for the classification of ultrasonographic image in patients with hepatic cystic echinococcosis, on the basis of characteristic and distribution of ultrasonic image of hydatid cysts in cases and systematic observation on dynamic changes of sonographic image under treatment with emulsion albendazole and in relation to clinical efficacy.
Methods: The ultrasonic image of 645 cysts in 497 cases with liver cystic echinococcosis was classified. The distribution of different types of image in patients was analyzed.

In the four decades from 1951 to 1990, the six provinces or autonomous regions (Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Xizang and Nei Monggol) reported a total of 26,065 surgical cases of hydatid disease, most of which were reported in the recent decade. About one third of the patients was children and adolescents under 15 years old. So far, cystic hydatid infections of local origin have been confirmed in 22 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in the whole nation.

Altogether 27,716 cystic hydatid cases and 445 alveolar hydatid cases clinically diagnosed and surgically treated in China were retrospectively studied. In accordance with the parasitic sites of the hydatid cysts and the various pathological types, different surgical procedures were adopted.
