The efficacy and toleration of doxazosin and atenolol were compared over a 52-week period in a double-blind, multicenter study of 228 patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension. Over the treatment period, both drugs significantly reduced blood pressure, and there were no clinically or statistically significant differences between treatment groups for reductions in standing systolic and diastolic blood pressures or in sitting diastolic blood pressure. However, atenolol treatment caused significantly greater reductions in sitting systolic blood pressure and heart rate.

To study the effect of operation for left ventricular (LV) aneurysm on right ventricular (RV) performance, we studied 50 patients before operation with right heart catheterization, RV angiography, and radionuclide ventriculography. Forty patients were followed up and underwent the same investigations 10 +/- 4 months after operation. At baseline, regional RV dysfunction was observed in 89% of the patients whereas global RV dysfunction was present in approximately a third.

A retrospective analysis of 137 patients treated with reconstruction of defects following head and neck cancer surgery is presented. From 1976 through 1984, 151 regional flaps were used: 43 pectoralis myocutaneous, 29 deltopectoral, 19 forehead, 17 nasolabial, 14 combinations of the aforementioned and 15 other types. The minimum follow-up was two years.

We have studied the effect of recombinant murine interferon-gamma (rMuIFN-gamma) on the protein content, phagocytic activity, and cytotoxicity of mouse peritoneal macrophages (MPM). The aim of this study was to see whether rMuIFN-gamma alone could influence these parameters of MPM activity or if an additional stimulus, like elicitation or cultivation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was required. The MPM cultures were treated with rMuIFN-gamma for 24, 48, or 72 h.

Administration of physiological saline or drugs together with saline into the airways is becoming common clinical practice. However, there are few studies on possible side effects. We have studied the effects of saline, saline plus xanthine oxidase, and saline plus xanthine oxidase plus superoxidase dismutase on lung-thorax compliance and on arterial blood gases in anesthetized, paralyzed guinea pigs, ventilated for 2.

DNA synthesis kinetics of P388 leukemic cells growing in ascites form in BDF1 hybrid mice were investigated during the periods of exponential growth and growth restriction. Incorporation of tritiated thymidine, and in some instances tritiated uridine, was studied by autoradiography in cells sorted from S-phase fractions during DNA flow cytometry. During exponential growth continuous labeling with tritiated thymidine indicated a growth fraction of unity, whereas the growth fraction was about 30% during growth restriction.
