Background: In recent years, the assessment of global longitudinal strain (GLS) derived by speckle-tracking analysis has become a clinically feasible alternative to left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (LVEF) for the assessment of myocardial function. However, the determinant factors of impaired GLS in structurally and functionally normal patients are unclarified. The objective of this study was to elucidate the determinant factors of impaired GLS in structurally and functionally normal patients.

Chronic lung diseases (CLD), including interstitial lung disease (ILD) and airway diseases (ADs), are common complications of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies are reported to be associated with CLD in RA patients. The presence of anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) antibodies (Abs) is associated with clinically amyopathic dermatomyositis developing into rapidly progressive ILD.

Integrated genetic and clinical prognostic factors for aggressive adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma.

Haematologica

August 2023

Division of Hematology, Diabetes, and Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki, Miyazaki.

The prognosis of aggressive adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is poor, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a curative treatment. In order to identify favorable prognostic patients after intensive chemotherapy, and who therefore might not require upfront allo-HSCT, we aimed to improve risk stratification of aggressive ATL patients aged <70 years. The clinical risk factors and genetic mutations were incorporated into risk modeling for overall survival (OS).

Background: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) occasionally occurs in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and confers a dismal prognosis. We previously reported that a single-nucleotide variant (SNV) of was associated with ILD in RA. However, the pathogenesis of ILD in Japanese patients with RA could not be explained solely by this SNV because its frequency is extremely low in the Japanese population.

Efficacy and safety of glecaprevir and pibrentasvir in Japanese patients with hepatitis C virus infection aged 75 years or older.

BMC Gastroenterol

April 2022

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki, Miyazaki, Japan.

Background: It is estimated that approximately 50% of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Japan are currently over 75 years old. However, patients aged ≥ 75 years are typically underrepresented in clinical trials of direct-acting antivirals. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of glecaprevir and pibrentasvir (G/P) treatment in Japanese patients with HCV infection aged ≥ 75 years.

Context: Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are very rare atraumatic or mild trauma fractures in the subtrochanteric region or femoral shaft. Some unique genetic variants in Asian populations might confer susceptibility to AFF, since the incidence of AFFs is higher in Asian populations.

Objective: Because rare variants have been found to be causative in some diseases and the roles of osteomalacia causative genes have not been reported, we investigated rare variants in genes causing abnormal mineralization.

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is often complicated with chronic lung diseases (CLD), including interstitial lung disease (ILD) and airway disease, which occur as extra-articular manifestations. CLD in RA have been associated with the production of rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-citrullinated peptide antibody (ACPA), or anti-carbamylated protein (CarP) antibody. However, few validation studies have been performed thus far.

Adult T-cell leukemia/leukemia (ATLL) is an aggressive peripheral T-cell malignancy, caused by infection with the human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1). We have recently shown that cell adhesion molecule 1 (CADM1), a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, is specifically and consistently overexpressed in ATLL cells, and functions as a novel cell surface marker. In this study, we first show that a soluble form of CADM1 (sCADM1) is secreted from ATLL cells by mainly alternative splicing.
