Background: Piperacillin/tazobactam (PIPC/TAZ), which is a combination of a beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor, often causes liver enzyme abnormalities. The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score is a simple index that uses the serum albumin and total bilirubin levels for estimating hepatic functional reserve. Although patients with low hepatic reserve may be at high risk for drug-induced liver enzyme abnormalities, the relationship between PIPC/TAZ-induced abnormal liver enzymes levels and the ALBI score remains unknown.

  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is linked to congenital infections, and this study aimed to validate a new IgM titer cutoff for detecting primary infections in pregnant women.
  • Over two time periods (2013-2017 and 2017-2019), researchers screened a total of nearly 32,000 women for CMV antibodies, with findings showing similar rates of IgM positives and congenital CMV cases across the two periods.
  • The revised IgM cutoff effectively enhances screening for primary CMV infections in mothers and newborns, though more research is needed on other testing methods beyond the Denka assay.

Introduction: Information regarding carbapenem-induced liver injury is limited, and the rate of liver injury caused by meropenem (MEPM) and doripenem (DRPM) remains unknown. Decision tree (DT) analysis, a machine learning method, has a flowchart-like model where users can easily predict the risk of liver injury. Thus, we aimed to compare the rate of liver injury between MEPM and DRPM and construct a flowchart that can be used to predict carbapenem-induced liver injury.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how serum levels of sTREM2 might predict cognitive impairment in non-obese patients with type 2 diabetes, as dementia risk is higher for these individuals.
  • Researchers followed 166 Japanese patients over two years, assessing their cognitive function and measuring sTREM2 levels, with results indicating that higher sTREM2 levels were linked to declining cognitive scores in those with elevated HbA levels.
  • The findings suggest that managing blood sugar levels is crucial to prevent cognitive decline, and that increased sTREM2 could serve as a potential marker for cognitive issues in poorly controlled type 2 diabetes patients who are not obese.
