Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks third in cancer-related deaths globally. Despite treatment advances, high post-hepatectomy recurrence rates (RR), especially with liver fibrosis and hepatitis C virus infection, remain challenging. Key prognostic factors include vascular invasion and perioperative blood loss, impacting extrahepatic recurrence.

Although small bowel cancer is rare, cases of carcinoma arising from the abdominal wall have not been reported. We report a case of a tumor arising from a stoma scar site, following ileostomy closure that was performed 60 years earlier. The tumor was resected for both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes and was found to be a primary cancer of the small intestine.

Article Synopsis
  • - Hepatic cysts are generally harmless and often don't show symptoms, but larger ones can lead to issues like jaundice and portal hypertension, although they rarely obstruct the gastrointestinal tract.
  • - In a reported case, a large hepatic cyst caused a blockage in the duodenum, requiring an emergency procedure where the cyst was punctured to relieve pressure and examine the fluid for malignancy, which returned negative results.
  • - To treat the cyst, laparoscopic deroofing was performed, but due to the cyst being strongly attached to the duodenal wall, the wall was left intact, demonstrating that a two-step method of cyst puncture followed by surgery might be effective in urgent cases.

Gastroenterological and Transplant Surgery, Applied Life Sciences, Institute of Biomedical & Health Sciences, Hiroshima University Hospital, Hiroshima, Japan.

Recent surgical technical improvements, such as endoscopic surgery with intersphincteric resection (ISR), could help avoid a permanent colostomy for patients with low-lying rectal tumors. However, the problems associated with anal dysfunction following ISR remain unresolved. We performed ISR and temporary ileostomy in a patient with low-lying rectal cancer.

Background: Anti-inflammatory therapy targeting interleukin (IL)-1β reduced cardiovascular events in a randomized trial. We evaluated the relationship between IL-1β mRNA expression in epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and clinically-assessed coronary atherosclerosis on computed tomography (CT).

Methods: We studied 45 patients before cardiac surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting [CABG], n = 18; non-CABG, n = 27).

McArdle disease (glycogen storage disease type V) is a rare hereditary metabolic myopathy. It can be overlooked clinically because it often presents as chronic asymptomatic hypercreatine phosphokinasemia (hyperCKemia). However, vigorous exercise or infections can trigger severe rhabdomyolysis.

To investigate why the development of a completely circular striated sphincter is so rare, we examined histological sections of 11 female and 11 male mid-term human fetuses. In male fetuses, the striated muscle initially extended in the frontal, rather than in the horizontal plane. However, a knee-like portion was absent in the female fetal urethra because, on the inferior side of the vaginal end, a wide groove for the future vestibule opened inferiorly.
