Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, now known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is a phenotype of the metabolic syndrome in the liver and is clearly associated with metabolic abnormalities such as hyperglycaemia and dyslipidaemia. Although the prevalence of MASLD is increasing worldwide, there is currently no consensus on the efficacy and safety of the drugs used to treat MASLD/metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Pemafibrate, a selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha modulator, was designed to have higher peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alfa (PPARα) agonist activity and selectivity than existing PPARα agonists, and in development trials, without increasing creatinine levels, lipid parameters and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were significantly improved.

Oral and maxillofacial trauma is influenced by various factors, including regional characteristics and social background. Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a state of emergency was declared in Japan in March 2020. In this study, we aimed to examine the dynamics of patients with oral and maxillofacial trauma over a 12-years period using interrupted time-series (ITS) analysis.

Although prescription review is an important role for pharmacists in anticancer drug therapy, there are no guidelines in Japan that specify what pharmacists should check for in chemotherapy regimens. This prospective multicenter survey aimed to investigate the implementation of chemotherapy regimen checks by pharmacists in general hospitals by focusing on 19 recommended confirmation items designed to enhance chemotherapy safety. This study involved 14 hospitals within the National Hospital Organization in different regions of Japan.

Introduction: Combination therapy of atezolizumab and chemotherapy has become the standard treatment for small-cell lung cancer. Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) can occur during immune checkpoint inhibitor administration. A few reports exist on pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) as an irAE after atezolizumab treatment.

Background and objective The treatment for symptomatic meniscus-deficient knees with cartilage defects remains challenging on account of insufficient meniscal substitutes. One solution for this might involve combining meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) and cartilage repair. In this study, we aimed to analyze the effectiveness and safety of MAT concomitant with cartilage repair for symptomatic lateral meniscus-deficient knees in a setting with limited availability of meniscal transplants in Japan.

Background: The incidence of gastric neoplasms in Helicobacter pylori (Hp)-naïve patients has recently increased due to a remarkable decrease in the Hp-infected population in Japan. We investigated the clinicopathologic differences between Hp-infected gastric neoplasms (HpIGNs) and Hp-naïve gastric neoplasms (HpNGNs) that have not been fully elucidated so far.
Methods: This retrospective multicenter study investigated 966 consecutive patients with 1131 gastric dysplasia or cancers who underwent endoscopic or surgical treatment for the recent decade.

Objective: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is the standard approach to lobectomy for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there are many different types. One of its approaches is complete thoracoscopic surgery (CTS), which may be less invasive because of low chest wall stress.

Background: To reduce surgical stress, we omit mediastinal lymph node dissection (MLND) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer aged ≥80 years without N1 metastasis, as confirmed via surgery. This study examined the effect of MLND omission on prognosis.
Methods: Altogether, 212 eligible patients with clinical N0 non-small cell lung cancer underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy between 2007 and 2017.

The high perimandibular approach is a feasible surgical technique for treating mandibular condylar fractures with open reduction and internal fixation, followed by fewer complications. Temporary trismus is the only postoperative complication that may occur. This study evaluated postoperative complications following open reduction and rigid internal fixation (OR-IF) of mandibular condylar fractures using the high perimandibular approach.

Therefore, it is important to confirm its diagnosis before the surgery. However, few cases have been diagnosed preoperatively.

Objectives: The aim is to evaluate the prevention and development of cervical cancer in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients in Japan and its background based on a questionnaire survey.
Methods: The questionnaire was handed to 460 adult female SLE patients at 12 medical institutions. The participants were grouped by age, and data related to their human papillomavirus vaccination status, age at first coitus, cervical cancer screening, and diagnosis of cervical cancer were analysed.

Endocytoscopy enables real-time observation of lesions at ultra-magnification. In the gastrointestinal and respiratory fields, endocytoscopic images are similar to hematoxylin-eosin-stained images. This study aimed to compare the nuclear features of pulmonary lesions in endocytoscopic and hematoxylin-eosin-stained images.

Purpose: We determined the usefulness of the estimation of physiologic ability and surgical stress (E-PASS), initially reported as a predictive factor for postoperative morbidity and mortality, as a prognostic indicator in stage II colorectal cancer (CRC).
Methods: Overall, 739 patients who underwent proctocolectomy for CRC at Tottori University Hospital and affiliated hospitals and histologically diagnosed with stage II CRC were included in the current study.
Results: A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis of the five-year recurrence-free survival indicated that the comprehensive risk score (CRS) of E-PASS predicted postoperative recurrence.

Importance: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) increases with age and is more common in frail patients. However, data are lacking on outcomes of oral anticoagulants (OACs) in very elderly patients with AF with frailty, who are ineligible for standard anticoagulant treatment.
Objective: To compare very-low-dose edoxaban (15 mg daily) vs placebo across frailty status, including each of 5 frailty assessment parameters, among patients with AF involved in the ELDERCARE-AF (Edoxaban Low-Dose for Elder Care Atrial Fibrillation Patients) trial.

Background: B-cell lymphoma, unclassifiable, with features intermediate between diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and classical Hodgkin lymphoma (BCLu-DLBCL/cHL), also referred to as gray zone lymphoma (GZL), is known to share features with cHL and DLBCL. However, GZL is often difficult to diagnose. There is no consensus regarding the optimal therapeutic regimen.

Background: Adjuvant chemotherapy for stage II colorectal cancer (CRC) is considered appropriate for patients with risk factors for recurrence, rather than for all patients uniformly. However, the risk factors for recurrence remain controversial, and there is limited information, especially for elderly patients. The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) is widely used as a simple nutritional screening tool in the elderly and is associated with cancer prognosis and recurrence.

In 2020, a 45-year-old woman was started on fulvestrant and abemaciclib therapy to treat breast cancer which had recurred in her left breast after surgery. We were able to control her cancer using this treatment; however, the ground-glass opacity in the lower lobe of her right lung expanded, along with an increase in her peripheral blood eosinophil count. She was referred to the respiratory medicine department for a detailed examination including bronchoscopy.

We report a case of functional recovery following incisional cheiloplasty for the management of lower labial edema that developed after bilateral neck dissection with preservation of the one-side internal jugular vein and postoperative chemoradiotherapy. An 81-year-old woman underwent partial maxillectomy for the treatment of maxillary gingival cancer(squamous cell carcinoma, cT1N0M0, Stage Ⅰ)in April 2013. In July 2013, she underwent bilateral neck dissection(right, modified; left, radical)for bilateral cervical lymph node recurrence with an extra-nodal spread and received postoperative chemoradiotherapy( CDDP 75 mg/m2×3 course and total radiotherapy dosage of 66 Gy).
