Gastric cancer (stomach cancer) is the fifth most common malignancy and the third leading cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide. Identifying gastric cancer patients at an early and curable stage of the disease is essential if mortality rates for this disease are to decrease. A non-invasive blood-based test that is an indicator of gastric cancer risk would likely be of benefit in identifying gastric cancer patients at an early stage, and such a test may enhance clinical decision making.

Department of Pathology, Taizhou People's Hospital, Taizhou, Jiangsu Province Shanghai Engineering Center for Molecular Medicine, National Engineering Center for Biochip at Shanghai, Shanghai Intensive Care Unit, Taizhou People's Hospital, Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, China.

Ubiquilin 1 (UBQLN1) plays an essential role in the regulation of protein degradations which is involved in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. This study aimed to investigate the expression level of UBQLN1 in gastric cancer and evaluated the relationship between its expression and clinicopathological characteristics, as well as prognostic of patients with gastric cancer. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to detect the expression levels of UBQLN1 in 179 pairs of gastric cancer and adjacent normal tissues.

Numerous studies indicate that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are dysregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and might serve as potential diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets of HCC. Therefore, it is interesting to globally identify the lncRNAs altered in HCC. In our study, we used microarray to profile the levels of lncRNAs and mRNAs in three pairs of HCC and their adjacent noncancerous samples.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of genetic variants in the PDGF signaling pathway related to pancreatic cancer risk in European populations using data from large genome-wide association studies.
  • Two specific genetic variants in the PDGFB gene (rs5757573 and rs6001516) were identified as potential risk factors for pancreatic cancer, with statistical evidence showing increased risk associated with specific alleles and haplotypes.
  • The research also found that these variants correspond to lower mRNA expression levels of PDGFB in certain cell lines and pancreatic tumor tissues, suggesting a link between genetic susceptibility and cancer development, warranting further research for validation.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in males worldwide. Circular RNA (circRNA) is a unique class of RNA transcribed by RNA polymerase II characterized by jointing 3' and 5' ends together via exon or intron circularization. However, the molecular functions of circRNAs in prostate cancer have rarely been explored.

Statins are widely used drugs for lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and can prevent cardiovascular events. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and their cumulative effects on the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients treated with statins. Sixteen SNPs were genotyped in 785 CAD patients receiving statin therapy, and their associations with clinical features and prognosis of patients were investigated.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is an early and key process in the metastatic cascade during the progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of the present study was to identify deregulated EMT-related microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) of CRC and assess the effect of differentially expressed miRNAs on the prognosis of patients with CRC. Genome-wide expression profiling of miRNAs was assessed in 3 EMT-negative and 3 EMT-positive CRC tissues.

Purpose: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play critical roles in diverse biological processes such as tumorigenesis and metastasis. Taurine upregulated gene 1 (TUG1) is a cancer-related lncRNA that is associated with chromatin-modifying complexes and plays an important role in gene regulation. In this study, we determined the expression patterns of TUG1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and evaluated its clinical significance.

Cancer Chemother Pharmacol

June 2016

Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai Children's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 1400 West Beijing Road, Lane 24, Shanghai, Zip Code 200040, China.

Purpose: To investigate the occurrence of apoptosis and autophagy on human gastric cancer cells after treatment by Tanshinone I, as well as the relationship between them.

Methods: BGC823 and SGC7901 cells were treated with Tanshinone I; the cell proliferation was measured using CCK-8 and clone formation assay; and the expression of apoptosis- and autophagy-associated proteins was detected by Western blot. Autophagic vacuoles in cells were observed with LC3 dyeing using confocal fluorescent microscopy, and apoptotic cells were detected via flow cytometry.

Key Laboratory of Systems Biomedicine (Ministry of Education) and Collaborative Innovation Center of Systems Biomedicine, Shanghai Center for Systems Biomedicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, No. 800, Dongchuan Road, Minhang District, Shanghai, 200240, China.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common malignant tumor worldwide. The prognosis and treatment of this disease have changed little in recent decades because the mechanisms underlying most events of this disease remain obscure. Allelic variation of gene expression is associated with many important biological processes, which provide a new perspective to understand HCC pathogenesis at the molecular level.

January 2016

Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center of Bioreactor and Pharmaceutical Development, Jilin Agricultural University Changchun, China.

The cytochrome P450 enzymes play a critical role in the metabolism of many commonly prescribed drugs. Among them, the most important enzymes are highly polymorphic CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6 and CYP3A5, which are responsible for about 40% of the metabolism of clinical used drugs. Here we developed a novel CYP450 oligonucleotide microarray that allow for detection of 32 known variations of CYP genes from a single multiplex reaction, including 19 polymorphisms of CYP2D6 gene, 8 polymorphisms of CYP2C9 gene, 4 polymorphisms of CYP2C19 gene and 1 polymorphism of CYP3A5 gene.

Institute of Neuroscience and State Key Laboratory of Neuroscience, CAS Center for Excellence in Brain Science, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai 20031, China.

Sensory neurons are distinguished by distinct signaling networks and receptive characteristics. Thus, sensory neuron types can be defined by linking transcriptome-based neuron typing with the sensory phenotypes. Here we classify somatosensory neurons of the mouse dorsal root ganglion (DRG) by high-coverage single-cell RNA-sequencing (10 950 ± 1 218 genes per neuron) and neuron size-based hierarchical clustering.

Electronic address:

5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), a neurotransmitter and vasoactive factor, has been reported to promote proliferation of serum-deprived hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells but the detailed intracellular mechanism is unknown. As Wnt/β-catenin signalling is highly dysregulated in a majority of HCC, this study explored the regulation of Wnt/β-catenin signalling by 5-HT. The expression of various 5-HT receptors was studied by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in HCC cell lines as well as in 33 pairs of HCC tumours and corresponding adjacent non-tumour tissues.
