The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for malignant tumors is significantly impeded by the short diffusion distance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the ROS-consuming glutathione (GSH) overexpressed in tumor cells. Therefore, enhanced PDT can be achieved by the construction of biomacromolecule-based nanodrugs that can specifically target ROS-sensitive mitochondria and deplete intracellular GSH. Herein, we synthesized the dextran-based nano-assemblies by a Graft copolymerization Induced Self-Assembly (GISA) method, in which methyl acrylate and diallyl disulfide (DADS) were copolymerized from a mixed dextran/amino dextran backbone in an aqueous medium.

Recent advances in tumor molecular subtyping have revolutionized precision oncology, offering novel avenues for patient-specific treatment strategies. However, a comprehensive and independent comparison of these subtyping methodologies remains unexplored. This study introduces 'Themis' (Tumor HEterogeneity analysis on Molecular subtypIng System), an evaluation platform that encapsulates a few representative tumor molecular subtyping methods, including Stemness, Anoikis, Metabolism, and pathway-based classifications, utilizing 38 test datasets curated from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and significant studies.

In oxygen (O)-dependent photodynamic therapy (PDT), photosensitizers absorb light energy, which is then transferred to ambient O and subsequently generates cytotoxic singlet oxygen (O). Therefore, the availability of O and the utilization efficiency of generated O are two significant factors that influence the effectiveness of PDT. However, tumor microenvironments (TMEs) characterized by hypoxia and limited utilization efficiency of O resulting from its short half-life and short diffusion distance significantly restrict the applicability of PDT for hypoxic tumors.

Biological samples are important resources for scientific research. These samples are stored in biobanks over years until needed, and some of them can never be retrieved if they are improperly stored, causing them to be wasted. Thus, they are priceless, and they should be used correctly and effectively.

Single-cell diagnosis of cancer drug resistance is highly relevant for cancer treatment, as it can be used to identify the subpopulations of drug-resistant cancer cells, reveal the sensitivity of cancer cells to treatment, and monitor the progress of cancer drug resistance. However, simple and effective methods for cancer drug resistance detection at the single-cell level are still lacking in laboratory and clinical studies. Inspired by the fact that nanoparticles with diverse physicochemical properties would generate distinct and specific interactions with drug-resistant and drug-sensitive cancer cells, which have distinctive molecular signatures, here, we have synthesized a library of fluorescent nanoparticles with various sizes, surface charges, and compositions (SiO nanoparticles (SNPs), organic PS--PAA nanoparticles (ONPs), and ZIF-8 nanoparticles (ZNPs)), thus demonstrating that the composition has a critical influence on the interaction of nanoparticles with drug-resistant cancer cells.

Background: Neuraminidase is a pathogenic protein of the avian influenza virus. Previous studies have shown that silibinin has the potential to inhibit neuraminidase activity.
Objective: This study aims to explore the interaction between silibinin and neuraminidase and the effect of silibinin on the structure and activity of neuraminidase.
Background: There are a large number of people suffering from gastric cancer (GC) worldwide, so the study of biomarkers for GC is urgently needed. This study aimed to investigate the role of esophageal cancer-related gene 4 (ECRG4) in the growth, metastasis, and prognosis of GC and the possible underlying mechanism.
Methods: The expression of ECRG4 was detected in GC tissues by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Western blot, and immunohistochemistry.

Loureirin B (LB), a natural product derived from Sanguis draconis, has hypoglycemic effects in diabetic mice. However, there are no studies on how LB lowers blood glucose. In this study, we first treated a diabetic model in mice with LB, and the results showed that LB lowered blood glucose and alleviated islet damage in mice.

Background: Inflammation is not only involved in the development and progression of cancer but also affects the response to therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in inflammation genes with the prognosis of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs).
Methods: Forty-seven SNPs were genotyped in 318 advanced NSCLC patients receiving EGFR-TKIs.

Cryopreservation as a method that enables long-term storage of biological material has long been used for the conservation of valuable zebrafish genetic resources. However, currently, only spermatozoa of zebrafish can be successfully cryopreserved, while protocols for cryopreservation of eggs and embryos have not yet been fully developed. Transplantation of germline stem cells (GSCs) has risen as a favorable method that can bypass the current problem in cryopreservation of female genetic resources and can lead to reconstitution of fish species and lines through surrogate production.

The aim of this study was to determine if microRNA (miRNA) expression is different among chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with early liver fibrosis classified according to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes. Eighteen CHB-fibrosis patients and 12 CHB patients without fibrosis were enrolled. The CHB-fibrosis group included 9 patients with the TCM syndrome of Ganyu Pixu Xueyu (GYPXXY), characterized by liver stagnation, spleen deficiency, and blood stasis, and 9 patients with the TCM syndrome of Qixu Xueyu (QXXY), characterized by deficiency of qi, blood, and blood stasis.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in males worldwide. lncRNAs (long noncoding RNAs) play a significant role in the occurrence and development of PCa. eRNAs (enhancer RNAs) and SE-lncRNAs (superenhancer lncRNAs) are important elements of lncRNAs, but the role of eRNAs and SE-lncRNAs in PCa remains largely unclear.
