The impact of additives on the nanoscale structures of spin-cast polymer composite films, particularly in polymer solar cells, is a topic of significant interest. This study focuses on the blend film comprising poly(thieno[3,4-]thio-phene--benzodi-thio-phene) (PTB7) and [6,6]-phenyl-C-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), exploring how additives like 1,8-di-iodo-octane (DIO) influence the film structures spin-cast from chloro-benzene solution. Combined results of specular X-ray and neutron reflectivity, grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS and GIWAXS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that DIO could significantly enhance the dispersion of PCBM and reduce composition inhomogeneity in the film.

In this study, we optimized the parameters of diffusion bonding on multi-layered stainless steel 316L and 430 stacks. The preparation process for diffusion bonding is crucial, as the bonding surfaces need to be polished and meticulously cleaned to ensure a smooth bonding process. We fabricated twelve-layer plates consisting of 55 mm × 55 mm × 3 mm and 100 mm × 50 mm × 3 mm dimensions, and the bonding response was investigated by evaluating the tensile strength of the bonding zone under varying bonding conditions, with a bonding temperature ranging from 1000 to 1048 °C, a bond time ranging from 15 to 60 min, pressure ranging from 10 to 25.

Center for Astronomical Physics and Engineering, Department of Optics and Photonics, National Central University, Taoyuan City 320317, Taiwan.

Alkali metal halides have long been used as scintillators for applications as sensors and detectors. Usually, a small amount of impurities are added to these inorganic materials to improve their luminescence efficiencies. We investigate the structures and luminescent properties of un-doped sodium iodide (NaI) and cesium-doped NaI (NaI:Cs) films deposited by thermal vacuum evaporation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on detecting changes in human posture during various movements (standing, walking, sitting) using two deep-learning methods: Feedforward Neural Networks (FNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM).
  • Researchers introduced transition stages as key features to improve rapid detection based on human intention, utilizing an inertial measurement unit (IMU) for data collection.
  • Results showed LSTM performed better than FNN, with high accuracies (91% and 95%) at different sampling rates, and the trained model successfully detected posture changes across different subjects, highlighting its potential for real-world applications like digital twins and exoskeletons.

Zirconium-based metallic glass films are promising materials for nanoelectronic and biomedical applications, but their mechanical behavior under different conditions is not well understood. This study investigates the effects of radio frequency (RF) power and test temperature on the nanostructure, morphology, and creep behavior of ZrCuAlNi metallic glass films prepared by RF magnetron sputtering. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction and microscopy, and their mechanical properties were measured by a bulge test system.

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole.

An indoor positioning design developed for mobile phones by integrating a single microphone sensor, an estimator, and tagged sound sources, all with distinct frequencies, is proposed in this investigation. From existing practical experiments, the results summarize a key point for achieving a satisfactory indoor positioning: The estimation accuracy of the instantaneous sound pressure level (SPL) that is inevitably affected by random variations of environmental corruptions dominates the indoor positioning performance. Following this guideline, the proposed estimation design, accompanied by a sound pressure level model, is developed for effectively mitigating the influences of received signal strength (RSS) variations caused by reverberation, reflection, refraction, etc.

Sensors (Basel)

October 2022

Aeronautical System Research Division, Simulation System Section, National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, Taichung 407, Taiwan.

Aircraft flight simulators have good cost efficiency, high reusability, and high flight safety. All airlines and aircraft manufacturing companies choose it as sophisticated training equipment for ground simulation, effectively reducing pilot training costs, ensuring personnel safety and aircraft wear and tear. The new simulator proposed in this paper combines a digital motion-cueing algorithm, flight software and motion platform to make pilots feel as if they are in the real world.

The use of additive manufactured (AM) titanium-based materials has increased substantially for medical implants and aerospace components. However, the inferior surface roughness of additive manufactured products affects the outward appearance and reduces performance. This study determines whether activation treatment prior to electropolishing produces a better surface.

It is important to be able to detect melamine a sensitive and fast method in the field of food safety. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has attracted much attention due to its high sensitivity, rapid results, unique spectroscopic fingerprint, and nondestructive data acquisition. In this work, we describe the preparation of flexible CS-ATS-Ag cotton swabs for use in SERS by anchoring silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), as a highly-sensitive SERS material, on cotton swabs (CS) using -[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl] diethylenetriamine (ATS) as the coupling agent.

Thin metal films are critical elements in nano- and micro-fabricated technologies. The texture orientation of thin films has a significant effect on applied devices. For Face-Centered Cubic (FCC) metal thin films, when the critical thickness is reached, the texture orientation can transform from (111) to (100) based on the model related to the balance between interfacial energy and strain energy.

In this study, an AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) was grown through metal organic chemical vapor deposition on a Qromis Substrate Technology (QST). The GaN on the QST device exhibited a superior heat dissipation performance to the GaN on a Si device because of the higher thermal conductivity of the QST substrate. Thermal imaging analysis indicated that the temperature variation of the GaN on the QST device was 4.
