Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the development of zwitterionic hyperbranched polymer (HBP) dots integrated into layered double hydroxides (LDHs) for long-lasting antibacterial effects.
  • The HBPs feature a unique spherical structure, with special blue luminescence, good water solubility, and various functional groups that help with antibacterial activity and intercalation into LDHs.
  • X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to confirm changes in layer spacing and the presence of functional groups, showing that the HBP/LDH hybrids can provide effective and controlled antibacterial release over time.

Protein cavities often rely on the paramagnetic metal present in their active site in order to catalyse various chemical transformations in biology. The selective detection and identification of the substrate is of fundamental importance in environmental monitoring and biological studies. Herein, a covalently linked Fe(iii)porphyrin dimer-based paramagnetic sensory cavity has been devised for the accurate detection and simultaneous identification of phenol (substrate) binding within the cavity that provides a unique spectroscopic signature with valuable structural and environmental information.
