Nano-On-Nano: Responsive Nanosubstrate-Mediated Liposome Delivery with High Cellular Uptake Efficiency.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

April 2023

Smart Organic Material Laboratory, Institute of Chemistry, Academia Sinica, Nankang, 128 Academia Road, Sec. 2, Taipei 11529, Taiwan.

Efficiently delivering liposomal content to cells in a relatively uniform dose and patterned fashion, especially bypassing the degradative endocytosis pathway, is an important technology in cell culture and potentially to tissue engineering that still remains challenging. We developed a "nano-on-nano" platform technology that consists of the following three material features: (1) high density silicon nanopillars to create a pseudo-3-dimensional nanoenvironment for cell culturing, (2) thermoresponsive polymer grafted onto silicon nanopillars to form a responsive nanosubstrate, and (3) immobilized liposomes using a biotin-streptavidin-biotin conjugation. The working principle is that the liposomes are detached for cellular uptake upon thermal stimulation and high local liposome concentration between the cells and substrates drives the cellular uptake with nonendocytic pathways.

Gallium nitride (GaN), widely known as a wide bandgap semiconductor material, has been mostly employed in high power devices, light emitting diodes (LED), and optoelectronic applications. However, it could be exploited differently due to its piezoelectric properties, such as its higher SAW velocity and strong electromechanical coupling. In this study, we investigated the affect of the presence of a guiding layer made from titanium/gold on the surface acoustic wave propagation of the GaN/sapphire substrate.

A rhodium(III)-catalyzed controllable [4 + 1] and [4 + 2] annulation of -aryl pyrazolones with maleimides as C1 and C2 synthon has been explored for the synthesis of spiro[pyrazolo[1,2-]indazole-pyrrolidines] and fused pyrazolopyrrolo cinnolines. The product selectivity was achieved through time-dependent annulation. The [4 + 1] annulation reaction involves sequential Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H alkenylation of -aryl pyrazolone, followed by an intramolecular spirocyclization via aza-Michael-type addition to afford spiro[pyrazolo[1,2-]indazole-pyrrolidine].

Here in this study we adopted genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to investigate the genetic components of the personality constructs in the Chinese Personality Assessment Inventory 2 (CPAI-2) in Taiwanese Hakka populations, who are likely the descendants of a recent admixture between a group of Chinese immigrants with high emigration intention and a group of the Taiwanese aboriginal population generally without it. A total of 279 qualified participants were examined and genotyped by an Illumina array with 547,644 SNPs to perform the GWAS. Although our sample size is small and that unavoidably limits our statistical power (Type 2 error but not Type 1 error), we still found three genomic regions showing strong association with Enterprise, Diversity, and Logical vs.

Liquid-phase photo-induced covalent modification (PICM) of single-layer graphene by short-chain fatty acids.

Nanoscale

March 2023

Research Institute for Electronic Science (RIES) and Division of Information Science and Technology, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Hokkaido University, N20W10, Sapporo, Hokkaido 001-0020, Japan.

We report an efficient photo-induced covalent modification (PICM) of graphene by short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) with an alkyl chain at the liquid-solid interface for spatially resolved chemical functionalization of graphene. Light irradiation on monolayer graphene under an aqueous solution of the SCFAs with an alkyl chain efficiently introduces sp-hybridized defects, where the reaction rates of PICM are significantly higher than those in pure water. Raman and IR spectroscopy revealed that a high density of methyl, methoxy, and acetate groups is covalently attached to the graphene surface while it was partially oxidized by other oxygen-containing functional groups, such as OH and COOH.

Silicon photonics (SiPh) are considered a promising technology for increasing interconnect speed and capacity while decreasing power consumption. Mode division multiplexing (MDM) enables signals to be transmitted in different orthogonal modes in a single waveguide core. Wideband MDM components simultaneously supporting wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) can significantly increase the transmission capacity for optical interconnects.

(1) Background: It is widely accepted that aberrant methylation patterns contribute to the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Ten-eleven translocation (TET) methylcytosine dioxygenase is an essential enzyme of which there are three members, TET1, 2, and 3, involved in hydroxymethylation, a newly uncovered mechanism of active DNA methylation. The epigenomes of gene transcription are regulated by 5-hydroxymethylcytocine (5-hmC) and TETs, leading to dysregulation of the immune system in SLE.

Produce Safety and Microbiology Research Unit, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Western Regional Research Center, Albany, CA, United States.

Traditional foodborne pathogen detection methods are highly dependent on pre-treatment of samples and selective microbiological plating to reliably screen target microorganisms. Inherent limitations of conventional methods include longer turnaround time and high costs, use of bulky equipment, and the need for trained staff in centralized laboratory settings. Researchers have developed stable, reliable, sensitive, and selective, rapid foodborne pathogens detection assays to work around these limitations.

The high precision three-dimensional (3D) visible light-based indoor positioning (VLIP) systems have gained much attention recently for people or robot navigation, access tracking, etc. In this work, we put forward and present the first demonstration, up to the authors' knowledge, of a 3D VLIP system utilizing a two-stage neural network (TSNN) model. The positioning performance would degrade when the distance between the light emitting diode (LED) plane and the receiver (Rx) plane increases; however, because of the finite LED field-of-view (FOV), light non-overlap zones are created.

Tunable Strategy for the Asymmetric Synthesis of Sulfoglycolipids from Mycobacterium tuberculosis To Elucidate the Structure and Immunomodulatory Property Relationships.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2023

Applied Chemistry Department, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (Previously National Chiao Tung University), 1001, University Road, Hsinchu City, Taiwan, R. O. C.

We developed a versatile asymmetric strategy to synthesize different classes of sulfoglycolipids (SGLs) from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The strategy features the use of asymmetrically protected trehaloses, which were acquired from the glycosylation of TMS α-glucosyl acceptors with benzylidene-protected thioglucosyl donors. The positions of the protecting groups at the donors and acceptors can be fine-tuned to obtain different protecting-group patterns, which is crucial for regioselective acylation and sulfation.
