Within the hemolymph, insect hemocytes constitute a heterogeneous population of macrophage-like cells that play important roles in innate immunity, homeostasis and development. Classification of hemocytes in different subtypes by size, morphology and biochemical or immunological markers has been difficult and only in extensive genetic analysis allowed the construction of a coherent picture of hemocyte differentiation from pro-hemocytes to granulocytes, crystal cells and plasmatocytes. However, the advent of high-throughput single cell technologies, such as single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), is bound to have a high impact on the study of hemocytes subtypes and their phenotypes in other insects for which a sophisticated genetic toolbox is not available.

Recent studies have linked the activity of ER aminopeptidase 2 (ERAP2) to increased efficacy of immune-checkpoint inhibitor cancer immunotherapy, suggesting that pharmacological inhibition of ERAP2 could have important therapeutic implications. To explore the effects of ERAP2 inhibition on the immunopeptidome of cancer cells, we treated MOLT-4 T lymphoblast leukemia cells with a recently developed selective ERAP2 inhibitor, isolated Major Histocompatibility class I molecules (MHCI), and sequenced bound peptides by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Inhibitor treatment induced significant shifts on the immunopeptidome so that more than 20% of detected peptides were either novel or significantly upregulated.

A search for lepton-flavor-violating Z→eτ and Z→μτ decays with pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses 139 fb^{-1} of Run 2 pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV and is combined with the results of a similar ATLAS search in the final state in which the τ lepton decays hadronically, using the same data set as well as Run 1 data. The addition of leptonically decaying τ leptons significantly improves the sensitivity reach for Z→ℓτ decays.

To address the major medical need for effective chemotherapeutics/diagnostics for brain cancer, in this work three cyclopentadienyl M(CO) (M = Re, Tc) complexes, which cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in high % and are designed to mimic the anticancer agent 2-phenylbenzothiazole, are in vitro and in vivo evaluated for anticancer action. The study includes cytotoxicity and uptake studies in cancer and healthy neuronal cell lines, mechanistic investigation of potential anticancer pathways, and biodistribution studies in mice bearing glioblastoma xenografts. The stable Re complexes exhibit selective uptake and significant antiproliferative effect, particularly against U-251 MG glioblastoma cells, with no significant toxicity in healthy neurons, demonstrating the suitability of this type of complexes to serve as selective therapeutic/imaging agents for brain cancer.

While rapid technological advances in radiotherapy techniques have led to a more precise delivery of radiation dose and to a decreased risk of side effects, there is still a need to evaluate the efficacy of the new techniques estimating the biological dose and to investigate the radiobiological impact of the protracted radiotherapy treatment duration. The aim of this study is to compare, at a cytogenetic level, advanced radiotherapy techniques VMAT and IMRT with the conventional 3D-CRT, using biological dosimetry. A dicentric biodosimetry assay based on the frequency of dicentrics chromosomes scored in peripheral blood lymphocytes from prostate cancer patients and PC3 human prostate cancer cell line was used.

Background: The aim of the present study was to provide an overview of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) bone turnover markers (BTMs) concerning the physiology of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and assess their potential contributions to regulating bone remodeling, that could prove useful in designing future approaches to modulating orthodontic tooth movement.
Methods: Multiple electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, LILACS, and Cochrane Library) were searched up to October 1st, 2020. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials, observational studies of prospective and retrospective designs, and cross-sectional studies reporting on levels of BTMs in GCF were eligible for inclusion.

Purpose: Germline genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 variants has been a part of clinical practice for >2 decades. However, no studies have compared the cancer risks associated with missense pathogenic variants (PVs) with those associated with protein truncating (PTC) variants.
Methods: We collected 582 informative pedigrees segregating 1 of 28 missense PVs in BRCA1 and 153 pedigrees segregating 1 of 12 missense PVs in BRCA2.

While RNAi is often heralded as a promising new strategy for insect pest control, a major obstacle that still remains is the efficient delivery of dsRNA molecules within the cells of the targeted insects. However, it seems overlooked that dsRNA viruses already have developed efficient strategies for transport of dsRNA molecules across tissue barriers and cellular membranes. Besides protecting their dsRNA genomes in a protective shell, dsRNA viruses also display outer capsid layers that incorporate sophisticated mechanisms to disrupt the plasma membrane layer and to translocate core particles (with linear dsRNA genome fragments) within the cytoplasm.

The development of peptide-based vaccines for treating human neurodegenerative diseases has been the eventual aim of many research endeavors, although no active immunotherapies have been approved for clinical use till now. Supramolecular organization and self-assembly are the pillars of functionality of many nanosystems. The covalent conjugate (6-spirolactam rhodamine B-6-monodeoxy)-β-cyclodextrin (Rho-βCD) is assembled as a self-included, rigid nanostructure, identical in the crystal and in aqueous solution, as revealed by detailed X-ray and NMR analyses. Rho-βCD self-assembly is the result of an interesting reaction pathway, which partially de-aggregates Rho and disturbs the zwitterion↔spirolactone equilibrium.

The question of whether "genetic information" is a merely causal factor in development or can be made sense of semantically, in a way analogous to a language or other type of representation, has generated a long debate in the philosophy of biology. It is intimately connected with another intense debate, concerning the limits of genetic determinism. In this paper I argue that widespread attempts to draw analogies between genetic information and information contained in books, blueprints or computer programs, are fundamentally inadequate.
