Article Synopsis
  • The B cell receptor (BCR) signaling pathway is vital for B cell development and is also involved in the progression of B cell cancers, leading to continuous activation of Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK), enhancing survival and growth of malignant cells.
  • BTK inhibitors (BTKi), like ibrutinib and acalabrutinib, effectively treat several types of B cell malignancies by permanently blocking BTK, but many patients may relapse due to resistance mechanisms, including mutations at the BTK binding site.
  • Newer approaches, such as non-covalent BTKi (like pirtobrutinib) and proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs), have shown promise in overcoming

Exploring the effects of topoisomerase II inhibitor XK469 on anthracycline cardiotoxicity and DNA damage.

March 2024

Department of Biochemical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Kralove, Charles University, Hradec Kralove 500 05, Czech Republic.

Anthracyclines, such as doxorubicin (adriamycin), daunorubicin, or epirubicin, rank among the most effective agents in classical anticancer chemotherapy. However, cardiotoxicity remains the main limitation of their clinical use. Topoisomerase IIβ has recently been identified as a plausible target of anthracyclines in cardiomyocytes.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common leukemia in adults. Despite its indolent clinical course, therapy refractoriness and disease progression still represent an unmet clinical need. Before the advent of pathway inhibitors, chemoimmunotherapy (CIT) was the commonest option for CLL treatment and is still widely used in areas with limited access to pathway inhibitors.

Efflux pump effects on drug resistance.

J Chemother

November 2023

Tuberculosis Research Center, Akdeniz University, Antalya, Turkey.

Resistance and tolerance to antituberculosis drugs have become serious problems in disease treatment. This multi-phase study investigated the contributions of efflux pumps to drug resistance. In the first phase, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) levels of antibiotics were determined.

The key cell population permits cancer cells to avoid immune-surveillance is regulatory T cells (Tregs). This study evaluates the level of Tregs in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients and the effect of Tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) on Treg levels, as a pathway to understand the immune response and behavior among advance stage and optimal response CML patients using imatinib therapy. Blood samples were collected from 30 CML patients (optimal response to TKI), 30 CML patients (failure response to TKI), and 30 age- and gender-matched controls.

The ECEE Network Group investigated early provision of HIV care to war refugees migrating from Ukraine in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) through an online survey. Fourteen countries admitting war refugees from Ukraine on March 31, 2022, completed the survey. Most centers (86%) organized provision of same day antiretroviral therapy (ART) for at least 30 days (77%), but indicated that it may affect the local HIV care.

The natural stilbene compound resveratrol (RSV) was extracted and purified locally from the black grape skin () cultivated in Iraq. Cultures of human peripheral lymphocytes were obtained from the blood samples of patients with and without lymphoma to be treated with RSV at different concentrations. Three RSV concentration levels were subjected to isolated lymphocytes from blood samples of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and without lymphoma to estimate the change in TNF-α and IL-10.

The neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y is widely used to study retinoic acid (RA)-induced gene expression and differentiation and as a tool to study neurodegenerative disorders. SH-SY5Y cells predominantly exhibit adrenergic neuronal properties, but they can also exist in an epigenetically interconvertible alternative state with more mesenchymal characteristics; as a result, these cells can be used to study gene regulation circuitry controlling neuroblastoma phenotype. Using a combination of pharmacological inhibition and targeted gene inactivation, we have probed the requirement for DNA topoisomerase IIB (TOP2B) in RA-induced gene expression and differentiation and in the balance between adrenergic neuronal versus mesenchymal transcription programmes.

The aim of the work is to investigate the clinical symptoms of thrombotic complications (TC) and the tendency of patients to increased thromb-formation in patients with beta-thalassemia (β-T). Female patients with β-T aged 18-40 years were studied: 130 beta-thalassemia major (β-TM), 95 patients beta-thalassemia intermediate (β-TI), 60 patients with beta-thalassemia minor (β-Tm). In patients with βT, the frequency of occurrence of TC was studied.

Natural antisense transcripts (NATs) constitute a significant group of regulatory, long noncoding RNAs. They are prominently expressed in testis but are also detectable in other organs. NATs are transcribed at low levels and co-expressed with related protein coding sense transcripts.

Maternal platelets in missed abortion; from a clinical perspective.

J Pak Med Assoc

December 2021

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, College of Medicine, Mustansiriyah University, Baghdad, Iraq.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the role of platelet indices, specifically mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width, as potential early screening tools for missed abortion in women.
  • Conducted at a Baghdad hospital, the research compared blood parameters between women experiencing missed abortion and healthy controls, involving 60 participants in total.
  • Results showed that all platelet parameters were significantly elevated in the missed abortion group, with platelet distribution width being the most effective predictor of this condition.

Inherited Bleeding Disorders in Iraq and Consanguineous Marriage.

Int J Hematol Oncol Stem Cell Res

October 2018

The National Center of Hematology, Al-Mustansiriyah University, Baghdad, Iraq.

Consanguineous marriage is defined as inbreeding between second cousins or closer. In such families there will be a potential increase in the autosomal recessive traits with its lethal effect, with an increased risk of morbidity and mortality in the new generation. Inherited bleeding disorders (InBDs) are rare complicated diseases, difficult and expensive to treat, the defect usually due to quantitative or qualitative deficiency of clotting factors, platelets or fibrinolysis.
