Background: Computer-assisted planning methods have increasingly contributed to preoperative ablation planning; however, these methods cannot automatically obtain the final optimal solution within a short time and are rarely validated in practice, greatly limiting their clinical applicability.

Purpose: We aimed to propose a full-automatic multi-stage ablation and needle trajectory planning method for CT-guided percutaneous liver ablation to attain the final optimal plans under multiple clinical constraints rapidly.

Methods: Our proposed method integrates the ablation zone planning fulfilling complete tumor coverage and critical structure avoidance while reaching a trade-off between ablation number and healthy tissue damage, and needle trajectory planning under multiple clinical constraints.

Shock wave therapy (SWT) is a new alternative therapy for patients with severe coronary artery disease that improves myocardial ischemic symptoms by delivering low-energy shock wave stimulation to ischaemic myocardium with low-energy pulsed waves. However, the specific mechanism of its protective effect is not fully understood, especially for the protective mechanism in cardiomyocytes after hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R). We selected a rat H9c2 cardiomyocyte cell line to establish a stable H/R cardiomyocyte injury model by hypoxia/reoxygenation, and then used SWT for therapeutic intervention to explore its cardiomyocyte protective mechanisms.

Department of Ophthalmology, Beijing Hospital, National Center of Gerontology Institute of Geriatric Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing 100730, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of combining subthreshold micropulse laser (SMPL) with ranibizumab in treating diabetic macular edema (DME) in patients at Beijing Hospital over a two-year period.
  • A total of 72 patients with DME were divided into two groups: one receiving ranibizumab alone and the other receiving a combination of SMPL and ranibizumab, and both showed significant improvements in vision and reductions in central macular thickness after 6 and 12 months.
  • While both treatment approaches led to positive outcomes, there were no statistically significant differences in the effects between the combination therapy and monotherapy groups.

Tumor neoantigens and tumor immunotherapies.

Aging Med (Milton)

April 2024

Department of Biotherapy Center, Beijing Hospital, National Center of Gerontology Institute of Geriatric Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Beijing China.

As a high-risk group of patients with cancer, the elderly exhibit limited efficacy with traditional treatments. Immunotherapy emerges as a promising adjunctive therapeutic approach that holds potential in addressing the needs of geriatric patients with cancer. Neoantigens, a unique class of tumor-specific antigens generated by non-synonymous mutations, are garnering increasing attention as targets for immunotherapy in clinical applications.

Article Synopsis
  • Glycated hemoglobin (HbA) variability is linked to increased risks of all-cause death and heart failure (HF) rehospitalization in patients with HF, regardless of whether they have diabetes or not.
  • In a study involving 65,950 HF patients over an average of 6.7 years, higher HbA variability correlated with worse outcomes, especially for those without diabetes.
  • Specifically, patients with HF without diabetes faced a significantly greater risk of rehospitalization and death compared to those with diabetes, highlighting the importance of managing HbA levels in all HF patients.

March 2023

National Institute for Nutrition and Health, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing 100050, China Key Laboratory of Trace Element Nutrition, National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China, Beijing 100050, China.

To describe the prevalence of alcohol consumption and the burden of hemorrhagic stroke and hypertensive heart disease attributed to alcohol consumption in adults aged ≥20 years in 31 provinces in China from 2005 to 2018. Data from several national representative surveys was used to estimate provincial alcohol exposure level of adults aged ≥20 years from 2005 to 2018 by using kriging interpolation and locally weighted regression methods. Global disease burden research method and data, and China's death cause surveillance data were used to calculate the population attributable fraction (PAF) of hemorrhagic stroke and hypertensive heart disease and the deaths due to alcohol consumption in men and women aged ≥20 years in 31 provinces in China.

Chinese expert consensus on prevention and control interventions for older adults with physical functional impairment (2022).

Aging Med (Milton)

March 2023

Center of Gerontology and Geriatrics, China National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Medicine West China Hospital, Sichuan University Chengdu China.

Older adults are at high risk for functional impairment, which is closely related to sarcopenia, falls, and frailty. This seriously affects their quality of life and health, and places a heavy burden on society and families. Although domestic and foreign sports recommendations and prevention and control guidelines/expert consensus have been issued for healthy older adults and functional impairment-related diseases, there is no guidance on prevention and control interventions for older adults with physical functional impairment.

Background: While vitamin D (VitD) levels are negatively correlated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) activity, VitD supplementation does not reduce IBD severity. The probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), which secretes p40, can upregulate colonic VitD receptor (VDR) expression. We therefore evaluated synergy between VitD3 and LGG/p40 in the treatment of mouse colitis.

Validation of a Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing Assay for Lower Respiratory Pathogen Detection.

Microbiol Spectr

February 2023

National Center for Clinical Laboratories, Institute of Geriatric Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing Hospital/National Center of Gerontology, Beijing, People's Republic of China.

Lower respiratory infection (LRI) is the most fatal communicable disease, with only a few pathogens identified. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), as an unbiased, hypothesis-free, and culture-independent method, theoretically enables the detection of all pathogens in a single test. In this study, we developed and validated a DNA-based mNGS method for the diagnosis of LRIs from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF).

  • Malnutrition results from inadequate intake or use of energy and nutrients, affecting both physical and mental health, especially in the elderly, and leading to poor clinical outcomes.
  • It's a widespread issue among older adults, significantly straining medical resources and society due to various risk factors such as demographics, chronic diseases, and psychosocial issues.
  • The current recommendations for addressing malnutrition in China's elderly population are inconsistent, prompting efforts to develop standardized prevention and intervention strategies based on global evidence and local clinical experience.

May 2022

National Center for Clinical Laboratories, Institute of Geriatric Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Beijing Hospital/National Center of Gerontology, P. R. China.

Introduction: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) assay for detecting infectious agents is now in the stage of being translated into clinical practice. With no approved approaches or guidelines available, laboratories adopt customized mNGS assays to detect clinical samples. However, the accuracy, reliability, and problems of these routinely implemented assays are not clear.

Article Synopsis
  • * Analysis of 418 patients revealed that 12% had positive bacterial cultures, primarily for coagulase-negative staphylococci, and those with infections were more likely to be on immunosuppressants or have undergone electrode replacements.
  • * Over a median follow-up of 36.5 months, patients with subclinical infections experienced higher composite events and rehospitalizations compared to non-infected patients, underscoring the importance of using the PADIT score for risk stratification.

The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was first detected in patients with pneumonia of an unknown cause in Wuhan, China in December 2019. It has since been confirmed as the pathogen for the new coronavirus pneumonia, recently named "coronavirus disease 2019" (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization. Although the general population is commonly susceptible to the disease, infected elderly people show fast progression and severe manifestations with a high proportion in critical condition as a result of compromised immunity and underlying diseases.
