Background: Aberrant gene promoter methylation is one of the hallmarks of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). is an important gene, implicated in sister chromatids cohesion, DNA repair, the regulation of gene transcription, apoptosis and hematopoiesis.
Methods: In this study, we investigate the possible implication of promoter methylation in AML pathogenesis using a cohort of AML patients and a cohort of healthy individuals.

: Geospatial linked data brings into the scope of the Semantic Web and its technologies, a wealth of datasets that combine semantically-rich descriptions of resources with their geo-location. There are, however, various Semantic Web technologies where technical work is needed in order to achieve the full integration of geospatial data, and federated query processing is one of these technologies. : In this paper, we explore the idea of annotating data sources with a bounding polygon that summarizes the spatial extent of the resources in each data source, and of using such a summary as an (additional) source selection criterion in order to reduce the set of sources that will be tested as potentially holding relevant data.

In this work, the antibacterial properties of nanostructured zinc oxide (ZnO) surfaces are explored by incorporating them as walls in a simple-to-fabricate microchannel device. Bacterial cell lysis is demonstrated and quantified in such a device, which functions due to the action of its nanostructured ZnO surfaces in contact with the working fluid. To shed light on the mechanism responsible for lysis, bacteria were incubated in zinc and nanostructured ZnO substrates, as well as the here-investigated ZnO-based microfluidic devices.

Bladder cancer (BLCA) is the sixth most common type of cancer and has a dismal prognosis if diagnosed late. To identify treatment options for BLCA, we systematically evaluated data from the Broad Institute DepMap project. We found that urothelial BLCA cell lines are among the most sensitive to microtubule assembly inhibition by paclitaxel treatment.

Here, we report photonic nanostructures replicated from the adaxial epidermis of flower petals onto light-polymerized coatings using low-cost nanoimprint lithography at ambient temperature. These multifunctional nanocoatings are applied to confer enhanced light trapping, water repellence, and UV light and environmental moisture protection features in perovskite solar cells. The former feature helps attain a maximum power conversion efficiency of 24.

Bone remodeling takes place over several weeks and the possibility to follow it in a quick and reliable way is still an outstanding issue. Therefore, this work aims to produce an implantable material that can be followed during bone regeneration by using the existing non-invasive imaging techniques (MRI).

Objective: To determine chromosome and gene alterations in ectopic endometrial (EM) tissue which may be implicated in the clinical course or the progression of endometriosis and to review the literature concerning the cytogenetic findings of women with endometriosis.
Study Design: 15 women who underwent laparoscopic endometriosis surgery at the Athens Genesis Clinic were enrolled in the study. Ectopic endometrial tissue was surgically removed and further analyzed by conventional and molecular cytogenetic techniques.

Melanoma is classified among the most notoriously aggressive human cancers. Despite the recent progress, due to its propensity for metastasis and resistance to therapy, novel biomarkers and oncogenic molecular drivers need to be promptly identified for metastatic melanoma. Hence, by employing nano liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry deep proteomics technology, advanced bioinformatics algorithms, immunofluorescence, western blotting, wound healing protocols, molecular modeling programs, and MTT assays, we comparatively examined the respective proteomic contents of WM115 primary ( = 3955 proteins) and WM266-4 metastatic ( = 6681 proteins) melanoma cells.

Here we use triple-cation metal-organic halide perovskite single crystals for the transistor channel of a flash memory device. Moreover, we design and demonstrate a 10 nm thick single-layer nanofloating gate. It consists of a ternary blend of two organic semiconductors, a p-type polyfluorene and an n-type fullerene that form a donor:acceptor interpenetrating network that serves as the charge storage unit, and of an insulating polystyrene that acts as the tunneling dielectric.

Background: Urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) is one of the cancers with the highest mortality rate and prevalence worldwide; however, the clinical management of the disease remains challenging. Metabolomics has emerged as a powerful tool with beneficial applications in cancer biology and thus can provide new insights on the underlying mechanisms of UBC progression and/or reveal novel diagnostic and therapeutic schemes.
Methods: A collection of four human UBC cell lines that critically reflect the different malignancy grades of UBC was employed; RT4 (grade I), RT112 (grade II), T24 (grade III), and TCCSUP (grade IV).

Background: Lipocalin-2 (LCN-2) has been identified as an osteoblast-secreted hormone regulating immunity, inflammation and metabolic homeostasis and has emerged as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for acute kidney injury in neonates. We investigated the impact of fetal growth on antepartum maternal serum, cord serum and breast milk LCN-2 concentrations and the associations of the latter with perinatal parameters.
Methods: Maternal serum, cord serum and breast milk LCN-2 concentrations were measured by ELISA in samples from 80 mothers who delivered 40 appropriate (AGA), 20 large for gestational age (LGA) and 20 intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR) neonates, classified by customized weight centiles.

Genome-wide studies in tumor cells have indicated that chromatin-modifying proteins are commonly mutated in human cancers. The lysine-specific methyltransferase 2C (KMT2C/MLL3) is a putative tumor suppressor in several epithelia and in myeloid cells. Here, we show that downregulation of KMT2C in bladder cancer cells leads to extensive changes in the epigenetic status and the expression of DNA damage response and DNA repair genes.

The investigation of conditions allowing multi-electron reduction and reoxidation of polyoxometalate (POM) films onto solid substrates is considered an issue of critical importance for their successful incorporation in electronic devices, different types of sensors and catalytic systems. In the present paper, the rich multi-electron redox chemistry of films of Wells-Dawson ammonium salts, namely (NH4)6P2Mo18O62 and (NH4)6P2W18O62, on top of metallic (Al), semiconducting (ITO) and dielectric (SiO2) substrates under ambient conditions is investigated. The respective Keggin heteropolyacids, H3PMo12O40 and H3PW12O40, are also investigated for comparison.

Background: Malignant cells exhibit significant resistance to FAS-mediated cell death, through different processes, including FAS mutations, soluble FAS expression, or FAS transcriptional dysregulation by P53, eventually escaping from immune surveillance. Since thyroid carcinomas were shown to be resistant to FAS-mediated apoptosis, we investigated the above mechanisms in thyroid carcinoma samples.
Methods: Thirty-seven thyroid carcinoma samples were analyzed for mutations in FAS exon 9 and TP53 exons 5-8 and protein expression by means of immunohistochemistry.

It has been demonstrated that APOBEC3B possesses cytidine deaminase activity, which is likely to result in C-to-T signature mutations. Increased expression of the APOBEC3B gene has been shown to correlate with higher incidence of such mutations in various cancer types, such as breast, bladder, lung, and head and neck carcinomas. In the current study, we used in silico methods, immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR to detect the presence of APOBEC3B signature mutations and examine the levels and patterns of APOBEC3B expression in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs).
