Background: Patients with high-risk feet and diabetes are prone to develop diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFUs). To prevent DFUs and their costs and impacts on diabetes mellitus (DM) patients' productivity and quality of life, patients' foot self-care (FSC) practices are essential to screen for DFUs. Our study aimed to assess the self-efficacy and outcome expectations about FSC and evaluate the knowledge about DFUs among patients with DM in Jordan.

Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition (CPPD), or pseudogout, typically affects joints like the knee and shoulder but can also deposit in spinal structures, sometimes leading to myeloradiculopathy with severe neck pain and upper limb weakness. Mild cases are managed with anti-inflammatory drugs, while severe cases require surgical decompression. We report a rare case of pseudogout causing cervical spine myelopathy at the C1-2 level, discovered during spine surgery and confirmed by pathology.

Activation of prepronociceptin (PNOC)-expressing neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) promotes high-fat-diet (HFD)-induced hyperphagia. In turn, PNOC neurons can inhibit the anorexic response of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons. Here, we validate the necessity of PNOC activity for HFD-induced inhibition of POMC neurons in mice and find that PNOC-neuron-dependent inhibition of POMC neurons is mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) release.

Keratoconus is a common progressive corneal disorder that can be associated with significant ocular morbidity. Various corneal imaging techniques have been used for the diagnosis of established cases. However, in the early stages of the disease, which include subclinical keratoconus and forme fruste keratoconus, detection of such cases can be challenging.

Liver mitochondria play a central role in metabolic adaptations to changing nutritional states, yet their dynamic regulation upon anticipated changes in nutrient availability has remained unaddressed. Here, we found that sensory food perception rapidly induced mitochondrial fragmentation in the liver through protein kinase B/AKT (AKT)-dependent phosphorylation of serine 131 of the mitochondrial fission factor (MFFS131). This response was mediated by activation of hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)-expressing neurons.

Agouti-related peptide (AgRP)-expressing and proopiomelanocortin (POMC)-expressing neurons reciprocally regulate food intake. Here, we combine non-interacting recombinases to simultaneously express functionally opposing chemogenetic receptors in AgRP and POMC neurons for comparing metabolic responses in male and female mice with simultaneous activation of AgRP and inhibition of POMC neurons with isolated activation of AgRP neurons or isolated inhibition of POMC neurons. We show that food intake is regulated by the additive effect of AgRP neuron activation and POMC neuron inhibition, while systemic insulin sensitivity and gluconeogenesis are differentially modulated by isolated-versus-simultaneous regulation of AgRP and POMC neurons.

Objective: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common condition affecting both men and women and has been shown to affect the quality of life. We conducted this study to estimate the prevalence of OAB, and to incorporate symptom severity, symptom bother and health-related quality of life (HRQL) in the assessment of OAB and evaluate associated factors.
Methodology: A total of 940 participants were categorized into non-OAB and OAB using the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS).
Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is one of the most potent vasoconstrictors, encoded by the endothelin-1 1) gene. It has been shown to play an important role in different diseases including Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Various single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the 1 gene are related to microvascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) such as retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy.

Background: Adherence to Congestive Heart Failure with reduced Ejection Fraction (CHFrEF) guidelines is not easily attainable everywhere, particularly in countries with a high prevalence of low socioeconomic status, which includes many Middle Eastern countries. However, it is well-established that adherence to the guidelines is associated with lower mortality and morbidity rates.
Objective: Our objective is to investigate the adherence to the degree of treatment guideline in CHFrEF within a patient population in the Middle East and correlate the level of compliance both fully and partially with morbidity and mortality outcomes.

Dysregulation of hypothalamic ceramides has been associated with disrupted neuronal pathways in control of energy and glucose homeostasis. However, the specific ceramide species promoting neuronal lipotoxicity in obesity have remained obscure. Here, we find increased expression of the C ceramide-producing ceramide synthase (CerS)6 in cultured hypothalamic neurons exposed to palmitate in vitro and in the hypothalamus of obese mice.

Trabecular bone score (TBS) assesses trabecular microarchitecture at the lumbar spine and was shown to improve fracture risk prediction compared to bone mineral density (BMD) alone. We investigated whether lumbar degenerative changes (DC) affect TBS and TBS-adjusted 10-year fracture risk assessment (tool) (FRAX) estimates. All patients who underwent BMD and TBS measurements via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at our institution between 1/7/2020 and 1/10/2020 were retrospectively evaluated.

Systemic metabolism has to be constantly adjusted to the variance of food intake and even be prepared for anticipated changes in nutrient availability. Therefore, the brain integrates multiple homeostatic signals with numerous cues that predict future deviations in energy supply. Recently, our understanding of the neural pathways underlying these regulatory principles-as well as their convergence in the hypothalamus as the key coordinator of food intake, energy expenditure, and glucose metabolism-have been revealed.
