Article Synopsis
  • Transplant oncology focuses on liver transplantation (LT) as a key treatment for patients with manageable but unresectable tumors, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), which are aggressive cancers often diagnosed at late stages.
  • Neoadjuvant interventions before surgery and the exploration of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICPIs) combined with locoregional treatments have shown promise in increasing the number of patients eligible for curative treatments through downstaging tumors.
  • The field is rapidly advancing with novel techniques like circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and liquid biopsies for early cancer recurrence detection post-transplant, highlighting the need for continuous adaptation to evolving care strategies in transplant oncology.

Objective: During radical pelvic surgeries fibers of the autonomic pelvic nervous network can be accidentally damaged leading to significant visceral sequelae, which dramatically affect women's quality of life because of urinary, anorectal, and sexual postoperative dysfunctions. Direct visualization is one way to preserve hypogastric nerves (HNs), pelvic splanchnic nerves (PSNs), and the bladder branches from the inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP). However, the literature lacks critical photos and/or illustrations that are necessary to understand the precise anatomy needed to preserve the pelvic autonomic fibers.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares two diagnostic models, ADNEX and ROMA, used to identify whether adnexal masses (tumors near the ovaries) are benign or malignant.
  • The research included 894 women undergoing surgery for adnexal tumors and found that ADNEX outperformed ROMA in terms of accuracy, particularly when combined with the biomarker CA125.
  • The results indicate that ADNEX not only provided better discrimination between tumor types but also had greater clinical utility, making it a more effective tool for clinicians in practice.

Clin Colorectal Cancer

December 2023

Department of Medical Oncology, Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milano, Italy. Electronic address:

Introduction: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare, slow growing tumor, traditionally considered chemoresistant. The only curative approach is cytoreductive surgery (CRS) followed by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). At disease relapse, or in patients with inoperable disease at diagnosis, no standard treatment has been defined, though nonrandomized series showed promising results with fluoropyrimidine-based regimens.

Objective: Previous work has suggested that the ultrasound-based benign simple descriptors (BDs) can reliably exclude malignancy in a large proportion of women presenting with an adnexal mass. This study aimed to validate a modified version of the BDs and to validate a two-step strategy to estimate the risk of malignancy, in which the modified BDs are followed by the Assessment of Different NEoplasias in the adneXa (ADNEX) model if modified BDs do not apply.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis using data from the 2-year interim analysis of the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) Phase-5 study, in which consecutive patients with at least one adnexal mass were recruited irrespective of subsequent management (conservative or surgery).
