Background: For patients with small-size colorectal liver metastases, growing evidence suggests thermal ablation to be associated with fewer adverse events and faster recovery than resection while also challenging resection in terms of local control and overall survival. This study assessed the potential non-inferiority of thermal ablation compared with surgical resection in patients with small-size resectable colorectal liver metastases.

Methods: Adult patients (aged ≥18 years) from 14 centres in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy with ten or fewer small-size (≤3 cm) colorectal liver metastases, no extrahepatic metastases, and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0-2, were stratified per centre, and according to their disease burden, into low, intermediate, and high disease burden subgroups and randomly assigned 1:1 to receive either thermal ablation (experimental group) or surgical resection (control group) of all target colorectal liver metastases using the web-based module Castor electronic data capture with variable block sizes of 4, 6, and 8.

Background: Cachexia is a frequent companion of chronic diseases and a well-established predictor of poor patient performance and outcome. Since cachexia as a discharge diagnosis is not much investigated, we aimed to investigate prevalence of cachexia in hospitalised patients and their outcome.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the National Hospital Health Care Statistics Database using the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases codes.

Background: Tuberculosis vaccine trials using disease as the primary endpoint are large, time consuming, and expensive. An earlier immunological measure of the protection against disease would accelerate tuberculosis vaccine development. We aimed to assess whether the effectiveness of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine for prevention of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection was consistent with that for prevention of tuberculosis disease.

Background: Dietary shift towards more plant-based options is increasingly popular, but the quantity of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) they contain is largely unknown. This study assessed the level of UPF and minimally processed food consumption among regular and low red meat eaters, flexitarians, pescatarians, vegetarians and vegans in a large dataset of United Kingdom (UK) adults.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis of the UK Biobank participants recruited between December 19, 2006, and October 1, 2010.

  • Previous studies hinted at a link between body fat and penile cancer risk, but evidence was limited; this study analyzed 829,081 Norwegian men to explore the relationship between BMI and penile cancer incidence.
  • Over 25 million person-years of follow-up revealed that higher BMI was associated with increased risk of penile cancer, with significant hazard ratios for those with BMI over 30.
  • The findings suggest that obesity correlates with higher penile cancer risk, indicating a need for more research to understand the underlying causes.

Background: Varying obesogenic inherited predisposition in early to later life may differentially impact colorectal cancer (CRC) development. Previous Mendelian randomization (MR) studies, conducted in populations of European genetic similarity, have not observed any significant associations between early life body weight with CRC risk. However, it remains unclear whether body mass index (BMI) at different early lifetime points is causally related with CRC risk in both Europeans and East Asian populations.

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Key Laboratory of Molecular Cancer Epidemiology, Tianjin's Clinical Research Center for Cancer, National Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, Tianjin, 300060, China.

Article Synopsis
  • CA125 is a commonly used biomarker for ovarian cancer screening, but its effectiveness is questioned due to issues like ineffective cut-off values and not accounting for changes over time in CA125 levels.
  • * This study analyzed data from the PLCO Trial, involving 28,456 women, to determine optimal CA125 cut-off values and examine the relationship between different patterns (trajectories) of CA125 levels and ovarian cancer risk.
  • * Results showed that certain CA125 trajectories significantly increased the risks of ovarian cancer incidence and mortality, with specific cut-off values identified for better screening performance over time.

  • * Participants included female patients aged 18-70 who had undergone surgery for early-stage triple negative breast cancer, with high-risk patients receiving a more intensive treatment regimen compared to standard therapy.
  • * Results showed that after a median follow-up of 45.1 months, the three-year disease-free survival rate was significantly higher for the intensive treatment group (90.9%) than for the standard treatment group (80.6%), indicating the potential benefits of personalized therapy based on

Baseline Association between Healthy Eating Index-2015 and Health-Related Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Patients Enrolled in a Randomized Trial.

Cancers (Basel)

July 2024

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit, Istituto Nazionale Tumori IRCCS "Fondazione G. Pascale", 80131 Naples, Italy.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) represents one of the most concerning aspects for cancer patients. The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) is an a priori diet quality index directly associated with health outcomes and HRQoL in cancer survivors in North American populations. We evaluated, in a Mediterranean population, the baseline associations between HEI-2015 and HRQoL in 492 women with breast cancer recruited in a DEDiCa lifestyle trial.

Objective: To assess recent temporal trends in guideline-compliant pediatric lipid testing, and to examine the influence of social determinants of health (SDoH) and provider characteristics on the likelihood of testing in youth.

Study Design: In this observational, multiyear cross-sectional study, we calculated lipid testing prevalence by year among 268 627 12-year olds from 2015 through 2019 who were enrolled in Florida Medicaid and eligible for universal lipid screening during age 9 to 11, and 11 437 22-year olds (2017-2019) who were eligible for screening during age 17-21. We compared trends in testing prevalence by SDoH and health risk factors at two recommended ages and modeled the associations between patient characteristics and provider type on lipid testing using generalized estimating equations.

Novel therapies have improved outcomes for multiple myeloma (MM) patients, but most ultimately relapse, making treatment decisions for relapsed/refractory MM (RRMM) patients increasingly challenging. We report the final analysis of a single-arm, phase 2 study evaluating the oral proteasome inhibitor (PI) ixazomib combined with daratumumab and dexamethasone (IDd; NCT03439293). Sixty-one RRMM patients (ixazomib/daratumumab-naïve; 1-3 prior therapies) were enrolled to receive IDd (28-day cycles) until disease progression/unacceptable toxicity.

Background: Adding ibrutinib to standard immunochemotherapy might improve outcomes and challenge autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT) in younger (aged 65 years or younger) mantle cell lymphoma patients. This trial aimed to investigate whether the addition of ibrutinib results in a superior clinical outcome compared with the pre-trial immunochemotherapy standard with ASCT or an ibrutinib-containing treatment without ASCT. We also investigated whether standard treatment with ASCT is superior to a treatment adding ibrutinib but without ASCT.
