Background: Radical surgery is the standard treatment for rectal cancer, but can impact quality of life. Recently, the concept of total neoadjuvant therapy with a watch-and-wait strategy has been proposed in which patients with a cCR after total neoadjuvant therapy do not proceed to surgery. However, most investigations of a watch-and-wait strategy have reported cases where cCR was achieved coincidentally via total neoadjuvant therapy.

Objective: Segmentectomy as a parenchymal-sparing surgical approach has been recommended over lobectomy in select patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer. This study aimed to address 3 aspects of segmentectomy ("patient indication"; "segmentectomy approaches"; "lymph node assessment") where there is limited clinical guidance.
Methods: A modified Delphi approach comprising 3 anonymous surveys and 2 expert discussions was used to establish consensus on the aforementioned topics among 15 thoracic surgeons (2 Steering Committee; 2 Task Force; 11 Voting Experts) from Asia who have extensive segmentectomy experience.

Background: Several reports have shown that the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and antibiotics (Abx) can reduce the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors in various cancers. To date, however, the association of immune checkpoint inhibitors with PPI and/or Abx in patients with recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M SCCHN) has not been reported.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients with platinum-refractory R/M SCCHN treated with nivolumab from May 2017 and March 2020 in our institute.

Introduction: In patients with chronic pain, oral analgesics are essential treatment options to manage pain appropriately, improve activities of daily living abilities and achieve a higher quality of life (QOL). It is desirable to select analgesics for elderly patients based on comparative data on analgesic effect and risk of adverse events; however, there are few comparative studies so far. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the efficacy and safety of acetaminophen are non-inferior to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the treatment of chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee in elderly patients.

Background: Although gemcitabine-based chemotherapy is the standard of care for advanced biliary tract cancers (BTCs), adjuvant phase III studies (BCAT in Japan, PRODIGE 12 in France) failed to show benefit, possibly owing to fewer patients (n = 225 and n = 194) compared with the adjuvant capecitabine BILCAP trial (n = 447). We performed a combined analysis of both gemcitabine-based chemotherapy adjuvant studies.
Methods: We performed individual patient data meta-analysis of all patients included in BCAT and PRODIGE 12.

Introduction: Tapentadol has analgesic effects comparable to those of conventional opioids and is associated with fewer side effects, including gastrointestinal symptoms, drowsiness, and dizziness, than other opioids. However, the safety of tapentadol in the Japanese population remains unclear; the present multicentre study aimed to examine the safety of tapentadol and the characteristics of patients likely to discontinue this treatment owing to adverse events.
Methods: The safety of tapentadol was assessed retrospectively in patients with any type of cancer treated between August 18, 2014 and October 31, 2019 across nine institutions in Japan.
