Forensic entomology plays a crucial role in estimating the minimum postmortem interval through the study of insect larvae found at crime scenes. The precision of this estimation relies on various biotic and abiotic elements that simultaneously influence insect growth and development, encompassing factors such as temperature, humidity, photoperiod, diet, and the existence of xenobiotics in decomposing tissues. Despite numerous studies on the influence of these factors, including the impact of xenobiotics, there are currently no robust tools available for making corrections to this estimation considering concurrently all variables.

Recreating cerebral tissue using a tissue-mimicking phantom is valuable because it provides a tool for studying physiological and biological processes related to tissues without the necessity of performing the study directly in the tissue or even in a patient. The reproduction of the optical properties allows investigation in areas such as imaging, optics, and ultrasound, among others. This paper presents a methodology for manufacturing agarose-based phantoms that mimic the optical characteristics of brain tissue using scattering and absorbing agents and proposes combinations of these agents to recreate the healthy brain tissue optical coefficients within the wavelength range of 350 to 500 nm.

Anterior Hyperfunction Syndrome: Literature Review and Conceptual Model.

Clin Pract

August 2024

Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory, Nanostructures, and Biomaterials Area, National School of Higher Studies (ENES) Leon, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Leon 37684, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • - Combined Kelly syndrome, or anterior hyperfunction syndrome, is a complex condition mainly triggered by tooth loss, particularly the absence of upper and posterior mandibular teeth, leading to various symptoms like bone loss and joint issues.
  • - The features of this syndrome are signs of "oral hyperfunction" and there's no clear agreement on how to diagnose it, suggesting a need for a better understanding beyond its classification as a syndrome.
  • - This study aims to review existing literature to propose a model for identifying risk factors that can help in early diagnosis and prevention, ultimately enhancing patient care and oral health.

Background: Lipocalin-2 (LCN-2) is an osteokine that suppresses appetite, stimulates insulin secretion, regulates bone remodeling, and is induced by proinflammatory cytokines. The aim of this work was to investigate the participation of LCN-2 in periodontitis associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) by evaluating alveolar bone loss, glycemic control, inflammation, and femur fragility.

Methods: A murine model of periodontitis with T2D and elevated LCN-2 concentration was used.

The purpose of this study was to analyze and molecularly describe the largest group of patients with ABCA4-associated retinal degeneration in Latin America. Pathogenic variants in ABCA4, a member of the ATP Binding Cassette (ABC) transporters superfamily, is one of the most common causes of inherited visual deficiency in humans. Retinal phenotypes associated with genetic defects in ABCA4 are collectively known as ABCA4-associated retinal degenerations (ABCA4R), a group of recessively inherited disorders associated with a high allelic heterogeneity.

The objective of this work was to assess the efficacy of different proteolytic agents on the bond strength of pit and fissure sealants to bovine enamel. Eighty-four bovine enamel specimens were randomly assigned in groups according to the pit and fissure sealant applied (HelioSeal F or Dyad Flow). Then, the specimens were subdivided according to the proteolytic agent used (n = 7): Group 1, distilled water (control); Group 2, 10 wt.

Mexico City, Mexico; Hepato Pancreato and Biliary Clinic, Department of General Surgery, "Hospital General de Mexico", Dr. Eduardo Liceaga. Mexico City, Mexico; Obesity and Digestive Diseases Unit, Medica Sur Clinic & Foundation. Mexico City, Mexico. Electronic address:

Introduction And Objectives: There are different situations in which an extrahepatic bile duct replacement or substitute is needed, such as initial and localized stages of bile duct cancer, agenesis, stenosis, or bile duct disruption.

Materials And Methods: A prosthesis obtained by electrospinning composed of Poly (D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PGLA) - Polycaprolactone (PCL) - Gelatin (Gel) was developed, mechanical and biological tests were carried out to evaluate resistance to tension, biocompatibility, biodegradability, cytotoxicity, morphological analysis and cell culture. The obtained prosthesis was placed in the extrahepatic bile duct of 15 pigs with a 2-year follow-up.

Institute for Molecular Biology in Medicine and Gene Therapy, Department of Molecular Biology and Genomics, Health Sciences University Center, University of Guadalajara, Guadalajara 44340, Mexico.

Microbial community control is crucial for maintaining homeostasis of the gut-liver axis in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Here, we show that supplementation with a mixture of Mexican foodstuffs (MexMix)- (nopal), (cocoa) and (crickets)-enriches several beneficial taxa in MASLD mice and overweight/obese humans. Thus, MexMix induces an important prebiotic effect.

Background: A synovial cyst is a herniation of synovial tissue through a joint capsule, often mistaken for a ganglion cyst. The key distinctions are that synovial cysts have a synovial cell lining, while a ganglion cyst is delineated by dense fibrous connective tissue. Typically found near joints, synovial cysts are associated with conditions like osteoarthritis, prevalent in females aged 20 to 50.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disease affecting millions of people worldwide. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are the most common drugs used to treat this acid-related disorder due to their high efficacy and fewer side effects. However, long-term use of these drugs can cause histopathological changes, including cystic dilation of gastric fundic glands.

Bees use thoracic vibrations produced by their indirect flight muscles for powering wingbeats in flight, but also during mating, pollination, defence and nest building. Previous work on non-flight vibrations has mostly focused on acoustic (airborne vibrations) and spectral properties (frequency domain). However, mechanical properties such as the vibration's acceleration amplitude are important in some behaviours, e.
