Article Synopsis
  • - African swine fever (ASF) is a serious disease affecting pigs, causing major economic losses worldwide, and is caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), which has complex effects on host cells.
  • - This study used transcriptome sequencing to analyze how ASFV infection alters gene expression in pig macrophages, finding that thousands of genes were significantly affected, particularly in cytokines and signaling pathways.
  • - Observations using electron microscopy revealed that ASFV infection caused damage to mitochondria and decreased structural features in macrophages, which may hinder their ability to detect and combat pathogens effectively.

This study focuses on optimizing the mutagenesis process for (Mel-7) mycelia through atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutation and explores the resultant thermal adaptability and physiological responses of mutant strains. This research demonstrated a clear relationship between ARTP mutagenesis exposure duration and lethality rate, indicating that an exposure time of 40 s resulted in the optimal balance of inducing mutations without causing excessive mortality. Additionally, this study established 43 °C as the ideal screening temperature for identifying mutant strains with enhanced heat resistance, as this temperature significantly challenges the mycelia while allowing thermotolerant strains to be distinguishable.

Electronic address:

Floccularia luteovirens is one of the rare edible fungi with high nutritional value found on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However, research at the molecular level on this species is currently constrained due to the lack of reliable reference genes for this species. Thirteen potential reference genes (ACT, GAPDH, EF-Tu, SAMDC, UBI, CLN1, β-TUB, γ-TUB, GTP, H3, UBC, UBC-E2, and GTPBP1) were chosen for the present study, and their expression under various abiotic conditions was investigated.

Through whole-genome re-sequencing of 18 germplasm resources collected from diverse regions in China, we identified significant variations in the form of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and Insertions and Deletions (InDels). These variations were comprehensively annotated, shedding light on the mutation types present in the entire genome of the germplasm. This analysis revealed the number and position information of each mutation and provided insights into the overall genomic landscape of germplasm.

Cell-Targeted Metal-Phenolic Nanoalgaecide in Hydroponic Cultivation to Enhance Food Sustainability.

ACS Nano

December 2023

BMI Center for Biomass Materials and Nanointerfaces, College of Biomass Science and Engineering, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan 610065, People's Republic of China.

The growing global population necessitates substantial increases in food production. Hydroponic cultivation systems afford a critical alternative for food sustainability and enable stable annual production regardless of the climatic and geographical variations. However, the overgrowth of harmful algal blooms significantly threatens the crop yield by competing with nutrition in the solution and producing contaminants.

Fruit thinning is a common practice employed to enhance the quality and yield of kiwifruits during the growing period, and about 30-50% of unripe kiwifruits will be thinned and discarded. In fact, these unripe kiwifruits are rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds. Nevertheless, the applications of thinned young kiwifruits and related bioactive compounds in the food and functional food industry are still limited.

Unlabelled: As rice is a staple food for nearly half of the world's population, rice varieties with excellent agronomic traits as well as high flavor and nutritional quality such as fragrant rice and purple rice are naturally favored by the market. In the current study, we adopt a fast breeding strategy to improve the aroma and anthocyanin content in the excellent rice inbred line, F25. The strategy skillfully used the advantages of obtaining editing pure lines in T0 generation of CRISPR/Cas9 editing system and easy observation of purple character and grain shape, integrated the subsequent screening of non-transgenic lines, and the elimination of undesirable edited variants from gene-editing and cross-breeding at the same time as the separation of the progeny from the purple cross, thus expediting the breeding process.

Acetic acid and furfural (AF) are two major inhibitors of microorganisms during lignocellulosic ethanol production. In our previous study, we successfully engineered Zymomonas mobilis 532 (ZM532) strain by genome shuffling, but the molecular mechanisms of tolerance to inhibitors were still unknown. Therefore, this study investigated the responses of ZM532 and its wild-type Z.

Bats are reservoirs for diverse coronaviruses, including swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV). SADS-CoV has been reported to have broad cell tropism and inherent potential to cross host species barriers for dissemination. We rescued synthetic wild-type SADS-CoV using one-step assembly of a viral cDNA clone by homologous recombination in yeast.

Swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) is an emerging swine enteric alphacoronavirus that can cause acute diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and death of newborn piglets. In this study, we developed a double-antibody sandwich quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-qELISA) for detection of SADS-CoV by using an anti-SADS-CoV N protein rabbit polyclonal antibody (PAb) and a specific monoclonal antibody (MAb) 6E8 against the SADS-CoV N protein. The PAb was used as the capture antibodies and HRP-labeled 6E8 as the detector antibody.

Short-term nitrogen limitation and continuous lighting (red/blue = 3:1) were applied individually and in combination to butterhead and red oak leaf lettuce for 1, 2, or 3 days before harvest to assess their effects on improving the nutritional value and sweet taste and reducing nitrate content and bitterness of lettuce. The results suggested that a 3-day nitrogen limitation combined with continuous lighting reduced the lettuce content of nitrate and sesquiterpene lactones and improved the quantities of soluble sugar, soluble protein, anthocyanins, and phenolic compounds without reducing the fresh weight of lettuce. In addition, vitro simulated digestion results suggested that the 3-day nitrogen limitation combined with continuous lighting significantly improved the sweetness and reduced the bitterness of lettuce compared to the control.
