The development of new treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders requires the development of physiological measures that can accurately translate between preclinical animal models and clinical human studies. Neurophysiological measures, especially event-related potentials (ERP), provide effective physiological read-outs of the flow of information from primary sensory through higher-order associative brain regions and thus can be used to investigate mechanisms underlying cognitive impairments across neuropsychiatric disorders. Traditional "time-domain" event-related potentials (ERP) such as auditory P300 and mismatch negativity or visual P1 and face N170 are increasingly being used in clinical studies for patient stratification, outcome prediction, or target engagement.

Vestibular rehabilitation (VR) is a therapeutic approach that minimizes the impacts of balance alterations by enhancing the central vestibular compensation mechanism. The present study investigates the effect of repeated balance exercises on the central vestibular compensation mechanism in a reserpine-induced progressive model of parkinsonism in aged rats. Male Wistar rats were assigned to three cohort experiments: Exp 1: repeated balance exercises (narrow beam test) - performed every 48 h during 20 days; Exp 2: balance exercises performed on the 0 and 8 days; Exp 3: balance exercises performed only on the 0 and 20 days.

Background: Spontaneous thought is a universal, complex, and heterogeneous cognitive activity that significantly impacts mental activity and strongly correlates with mental disorders.
Methods: Utilizing the think-aloud method, we captured spontaneous thoughts during rest from 38 diagnosed with depression, alongside 36 healthy controls and 137 healthy individuals. Through a comprehensive assessment of various dimensions of thought content, we compared thought content between individuals with depression and healthy controls, and between healthy women and men.

Hormonal imbalance during pregnancy is a risk factor for neuropsychiatric impairment in the offspring. It has been suggested that hypothyroidism leads to dysfunction of cortical GABAergic interneurons and inhibitory system development that in turn underlies impairment of the central nervous system. Human cortical development follows a sensorimotor-to-association sequence during childhood and adolescence. The brain's capacity to enact this sequence over decades indicates that it relies on intrinsic mechanisms to regulate inter-regional differences in the timing of cortical maturation, yet regulators of human developmental chronology are not well understood. Given evidence from animal models that thalamic axons modulate windows of cortical plasticity, here we evaluate the overarching hypothesis that structural connections between the thalamus and cortex help to coordinate cortical maturational heterochronicity during youth.
