Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the relationship between the cone-beam computed tomographic periapical volume index (CBCTPAVI) and periapical lesion volume in comparison with Orstavik's periapical index (PAI).
  • It involved analyzing 76 imaging records from 42 patients suffering from apical periodontitis, where PAI scores were assigned by two observers and lesion volumes were calculated using ITK-SNAP software.
  • Results indicated a moderate positive correlation between PAI and both lesion volume and CBCTPAVI, highlighting potential inaccuracies in traditional 2D periapical radiographs despite their correlation with volumetric assessments from CBCT images.

Cleft lip and palate are common congenital deformities that significantly impact facial anatomy and function, often requiring surgical intervention to correct. Presurgical nasoalveolar molding (NAM) therapy has emerged as an effective nonsurgical approach to improve surgical outcomes by reducing the severity of clefts and molding the alveolar, lip, and nasal segments into more favorable positions. This case report describes the use of NAM therapy in a 15-day-old patient with unilateral cleft lip, palate, and nasal involvement to improve outcomes before cheiloplasty.
