Degradation reaction paths starting from riboflavin (RF) were investigated using DFT (density functional theory) as the first attempt to reveal their elementary processes. Photochemical reactions were followed in the lowest triplet spin state, "(T)". Two intermediates [Int1(T) and Int2(T)] were found in the course, RF(T) → FMF (7,8-dimethyl-10-formylflavin, T).

Direct reciprocity plays an essential role in forming cooperative relationships. Direct reciprocity requires individuals to keep track of past interactions and condition their behavior on the previous behavior of their partners. In controlled experimental situations, it is known that children establish direct reciprocity according to the partner's behavior, but this has not been verified in real life.

We implemented a two-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) for classification of polar maps extracted from Carimas (Turku PET Centre, Finland) software used for myocardial perfusion analysis. 138 polar maps from O-HO stress perfusion study in JPEG format from patients classified as ischemic or non-ischemic based on finding obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) on invasive coronary artery angiography were used. The CNN was evaluated against the clinical interpretation.

Background: Although functional impairment in patients with myotonic dystrophy is an important determinant of the quality of life (QoL), patients' subjective evaluation of their symptoms may also affect their QoL. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between subjective symptom impact and the QoL of patients with myotonic dystrophy, after controlling for functional impairment.
Methods: Eligible patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) were recruited from four hospitals in Japan.

A bis(μ-oxo)diiron(IV,IV) complex as a model for intermediate Q in the methane monooxygenase reaction cycle has been prepared. The precursor complex with a [FeFe(μ-O)] core was fully characterized by X-ray crystallography and other spectroscopic analyses and was converted to the [Fe(μ-O)] complex via electrochemical oxidation at 1000 mV (vs Ag/Ag) in acetone at 193 K. The UV-vis spectral features, Mössbauer parameters (Δ = 2.

Sequential Knoevenagel condensation/cyclization leading to indene and benzofulvene derivatives has been developed. The reaction of 2-(1-phenylvinyl)benzaldehyde with malonates gave benzylidene malonates, cyclized indenes, and dehydrogenated benzofulvenes. The product selectivity depends on the reaction conditions.

The relationship between the lactim-lactam tautomerization and the free-radical scavenging reaction in vitamin B9 [folic acid (FA)] was investigated by density functional theory calculations. 6-Methylpterin was also adopted for the detailed analyses of various reaction paths. For pterin, the transition state of the tautomerization with two water molecules ( = 2) was calculated to be of the lowest activation energy.

How can we effectively promote the public's prevention of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection? Jordan et al. (2020) found with United States samples that emphasizing either self-interest or collective-interest of prevention behaviors could promote the public's prevention intention. Moreover, prosocially framed messaging was more effective in motivating prevention intention than self-interested messaging.

The oxidation reaction of thiamine (vitamin B1) to thiochrome was investigated by DFT calculations. Three reaction systems, [A] thiamine + methyl peroxy radical + (H2O)8, [B] thiamine + cyanogen bromide + HO-(H2O)8 and [C] thiamine + mercury(ii) chloride + HO-(H2O)8, were investigated. wB97X-D/6-311+G** for [A] and [B] and wB97X-D/SDD&6-311(+)G** for [C] geometry optimizations were carried out with the solvent effect (water).

The emergence and dissemination of resistance to clinically important antimicrobials in wild animals is of great concern. The aim of our study was to reveal the prevalence and intraspecies dissemination of quinolone-resistant Escherichia coli (QREC) in sika deer (Cervus nippon) in Nara Park, a famous tourist spot in Japan. Fecal samples were collected from 59 wild deer in Nara Park between July and October 2018.

In a ciliate Paramecium, the presence of water channels on the membrane of contractile vacuole has long been predicted by both morphological and physiological data, however, to date either the biochemical or the molecular biological data have not been provided. In the present study, to examine the presence of aquaporin in Paramecium, we carried out RT-PCR with degenerated primers designed based on the ParameciumDB, and an aquaporin cDNA (aquaporin 1, aqp1) with a full-length ORF encoding 251 amino acids was obtained from Paramecium multimicronucleatum by using RACE. The deduced amino acid sequence of AQP1 had NPA-NPG motifs, and the prediction of protein secondary structure by CNR5000 and hydropathy plot showed the presence of six putative transmembrane domains and five connecting loops.

Healthcare professionals involved in the treatment and care of patients with intractable diseases, such as muscular dystrophy, increasingly encounter situations that can elicit emotional distress for them as well as the patients. Therefore, medical professionals also need support. This article describes a psychological case conference of multidisciplinary professionals involved in the treatment of a deceased patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The current focus of meeting the physical activity guidelines for children and young people include preventing conditions such as high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, obesity, low bone density, depression, and injuries. However, the relationship between sleep habits and meeting physical activity guidelines is still unclear. This study aimed to assess this relationship among fifth- to eighth-grade (ages 10-14) Japanese children.

Recently, smaller-size electron-beam (EB) accelerators have offered EB irradiation in laboratory systems. Therefore, polymer surface treatments with low-energy EB have been developed in the past years. For high adhesion strength, low-energy EB treatment is also a promising method in comparison to plasma surface treatment.

Paramecium shows rapid forward swimming due to increased beat frequency of cilia in normal (forward swimming) direction in response to various kinds of stimuli applied to the cell surface that cause K -outflow accompanied by a membrane hyperpolarization. Some adenylate cyclases are known to be functional K channels in the membrane. Using gene-specific knockdown methods, we examined nine paralogues of adenylate cyclases in P.

Demands for chemical-free treatments for controlling insect pests are increasing worldwide. One such treatment is microwave heating; however, two critical issues arise when using microwaves as a heat source: intensive labor and excessive energy-consumption. Optimization is thus required to reduce energy consumption while effectively killing insects.

Objective: This study aimed to compare the effect of continuing and discontinuing medications on quality of life of patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Data Sources: PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases were searched using generic terms for ADHD, discontinuing, continuing, pharmacotherapy, and randomized controlled trials without date or language restrictions.
Study Selection: Of the 3,672 screened studies, 9 met the predefined inclusion criteria on patients with ADHD; 5 of these 9 studies reporting on 1,463 patients (children and adolescents, n = 894; adults, n = 569) measured quality of life and were included in this meta-analysis.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of reactions between 2'-deoxyguanosine (dR-Gua) and hydroxyl radical (HO) with water molecules (HO), = 0, 1, and 2, were carried out. The HO addition to three carbon sites, C(4), C(5), and C(8), and the subsequent ring cleavage of the three HO adducts were investigated. The addition to C(5) is of the smallest activation energy according to the largest lobe of the dR-Gua highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) at C(5).
