Background: Several guidelines recommend the measurement of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) to diagnose heart failure (HF); however, no screening criteria for measuring NT-proBNP in asymptomatic patients exist. We develop/validate a clinical prediction model for elevated NT-proBNP to support clinical outpatient decision-making.
Methods: In this multicenter cohort study, we used a derivation cohort (24 facilities) from 2017 to 2021 and a validation cohort at one facility from 2020 to 2021.

Background: The aim of this study was to clarify the timing of injuries in utero that cause respiratory inhibition after crying (RIAC). We evaluated infants with cranial ultrasound abnormalities diagnosed during hospitalization.
Methods: We retrospectively examined the medical records of preterm infants who were treated in the neonatal intensive care unit at Nara Prefectural Hospital in Nara, Japan from January 2006 through December 2010.

Background: To clarify the timing of injury in utero causing respiratory inhibition after crying (RIAC), the relationship between asphyxia and RIAC was investigated in infants whose gestational age was ≥ 36 weeks.
Methods: RIAC and cranial ultrasound abnormalities were examined for retrospectively in infants treated in the neonatal intensive care unit from April 2004 through March 2009. All included infants were gestational age ≥ 36 weeks and had an Apgar score <4 points at 1 min.

Background: In order to establish an effective screening method for respiratory inhibition after crying (RIAC), we prospectively studied the correlations between infant RIAC and perinatal factors.
Methods: We monitored infants (n=141) born from May through July 2009 with polygraphy and evaluated the presence of RIAC and respiratory pause that occurred when feeding was initiated immediately after crying with a decrease in oxygen saturation (SpO(2) ) to <60%. The infants were screened for increased echogenicity, a cyst in the ganglionic eminence (GE), or a subependymal cyst by cranial ultrasound.

Background: There have been no reports describing the results of conservative treatment of acute lateral ligament injury of the ankle in detail in terms of the severity of the injury, and the results of conservative treatment for injury with severe instability are still controversial. The purpose of this study was to assess the results of nonoperative treatment of acute lateral ligament injury according to its severity.
Methods: Fifty-five consecutive acute lateral ankle ligament injuries in 54 patients who were treated nonoperatively were followed up as a prospective study.

Brief focal ischemia leading to temporary neurological deficits induces delayed hyperintensity on T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the striatum of humans and rats. The T1 hyperintensity may stem from biochemical alterations including manganese (Mn) accumulation after ischemia. To clarify the significance of this MRI modification, we investigated the changes in the dorsolateral striatum of rats from 4 hours through 16 weeks after a 15-minute period of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), for MRI changes, Mn concentration, neuronal number, reactivities of astrocytes and microglia/macrophages, mitochondrial Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), glutamine synthetase (GS), and amyloid precursor protein.

Eukaryotic glycogen debranching enzyme (GDE) possesses two different catalytic activities (oligo-1,4-->1,4-glucantransferase/amylo-1,6-glucosidase) on a single polypeptide chain. To elucidate the structure-function relationship of GDE, the catalytic residues of yeast GDE were determined by site-directed mutagenesis. Asp-535, Glu-564, and Asp-670 on the N-terminal half and Asp-1086 and Asp-1147 on the C-terminal half were chosen by the multiple sequence alignment or the comparison of hydrophobic cluster architectures among related enzymes.

Background: Activated neutrophils play an important role in the pathogenesis of renal injury in humans and in experimental models of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). To evaluate the clinical significance of the circulating granulocyte elastase-alpha1-proteinase inhibitor complex (GEPIC), which is a marker of neutrophil activation, we investigated the plasma concentrations of GEPIC in children with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) associated with verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC), VTEC gastroenteritis without HUS and in normal controls.
Methods: Of 22 children (1-19 years of age; mean age 5.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) following Putti-Platt procedure for recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder. Six shoulders of six patients who had received Putti-Platt procedure were evaluated by the MRI before and after operation. After the Putti-Platt procedure the subscapularis tendon was thickened and an increased signal area on T2-weighted images were observed in four patients.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the osteopenia in several parts of the shoulder joint in a series of individuals suffering from frozen shoulder and to elucidate the pathogenesis. The bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). In 30 cases of frozen shoulder, 16 men and 14 women, BMD of the head of the humerus, greater tubercle of the humerus, surgical neck of the humerus, and neck of the scapula was evaluated.
