Obesity and overweight are highly prevalent in individuals with bipolar disorder and are associated with a risk of developing not only physical but also mental problems. The current study aimed to determine the association between bedroom light exposure at night and obesity in individuals with bipolar disorder. This cross-sectional study enrolled 200 outpatients with bipolar disorder.

Background/aim: We investigated the relationship between solid component size (SS), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and standardized uptake value (SUVmax) as continuous variables and postoperative clustered circulating tumor cell (C-CTC) detection in patients with pulmonary adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery.

Patients And Methods: C-CTC detection was the main evaluation item, which was analyzed using the receiver operating characteristic curve to calculate areas under the curves (AUCs) for the variables. Additionally, the two-year recurrence-free survival rates (2Y-RFSRs) were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • Copeptin is a potential biomarker for predicting postoperative acute kidney injury in patients who have undergone cardiac surgery.
  • High copeptin levels were linked to increased levels of arginine vasopressin and cortisol, indicating a stress response post-surgery.
  • The study found that copeptin levels measured immediately after surgery strongly predicted the risk of developing acute kidney injury, suggesting it may be useful in clinical settings.

UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine kinase (GNE) is necessary for sialic acid biosynthesis. GNE myopathy is caused by a defect in GNE, and hyposialylation is a key factor in the pathomechanism of GNE myopathy. Although candidates for evaluating hyposialylation have been reported, it is difficult to measure them in routine clinical practice.

Aortic dissection and aneurysm are associated with abnormal hemodynamic loads originating from hypertension. Our previous study demonstrated that cyclic mechanical stretch (CMS, mimicked hypertension) caused the death of rat aortic smooth muscle cells (RASMCs) in a mitogen activated-protein kinases (MAPKs)-dependent manner. The current study investigated the effects of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) on CMS-induced RASMC death.

Aim: We assessed the efficacy of buprenorphine replacement taper therapy in a psychiatric hospital in Japan.

Methods: Based on the medical records, a retrospective analysis was performed to evaluate the outcomes of buprenorphine replacement taper therapy in 106 subjects with heroin dependence.

Results: We found that replacement and taper therapy with buprenorphine could significantly reduce withdrawal symptoms during detoxification.

Background: According to the WHO classification, adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) is a localised small (≤3 cm) adenocarcinoma whose growth is restricted to neoplastic cells along pre-existing alveolar structures, lacking stromal, lymphovascular, or pleural invasion. There is no evidence to define AIS as having a tumour size of ≤3 cm. It is extremely rare for adenocarcinomas with pure lepidic growth lacking invasion to be >3.

Objective: Melatonin is involved in the regulation of sleep and circadian biological rhythmicity; decreased melatonin secretion has been associated with circadian disruptions. Previous studies evaluating melatonin levels between patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and controls without PD have found conflicting results; however, large-scale studies have not been performed. Our aim is to compare endogenous melatonin levels between patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and non-PD older adults.

Background: Previous studies have reported that estimates of portion size, energy, and macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fat based on the food-photographic record closely correlate with directly weighed values. However, the correlation based on a large sample of the test meal with the evidence of many nutrients is yet to be determined. We conducted this study to assess the correlation and difference between the food-photographic record and weighed results for 44 nutrients based on a larger number of test meals than those in previous studies.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the structural and functional changes of left-sided cardiac chambers by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) in patients with chronic mitral regurgitation after mitral valve repair (MVR).

Patients And Methods: Among 103 patients who underwent MVR, 21 showed normal left ventricular (LV) function; their pre- and postoperative left atrial (LA) and LV functions were examined by CMRI.

Results: LV end-diastolic volume, LV end-systolic volume, and LV mass significantly were reduced postoperatively (p<0.
