Article Synopsis
  • A study developed a Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) severity (DDS) score to predict complications associated with drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS), particularly looking at severe complications like myocarditis and autoimmune diseases.
  • A retrospective analysis of 48 patients in Japan identified that a higher DDS score (≥4.0) could indicate a higher risk for these complications, while no complications were seen in those with lower scores (≤2.0).
  • Findings suggested that the use of corticosteroids may increase the risk of certain complications and deaths, particularly in patients with infectious diseases, while early treatment for cytomegalovirus seemed to prevent complications.

Study Objectives: Skin temperature manipulation with little or no change in core body temperature affects sleep-wake states; however, the association of 24-hour skin temperature variation with sleep quality has not been investigated in a large-scale population. We examined the association between the circadian rhythm of distal skin temperature and sleep quality in real-life settings and aimed to provide additional evidence of the link between thermoregulation and sleep-wake states.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 2,187 community-dwelling adults, we measured distal skin temperature at the ventral forearm at 3-minute intervals for 7 consecutive days to calculate nonparametric indicators of a circadian skin temperature rhythm, including intradaily variability, interdaily stability, and relative amplitude.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydroa vacciniforme lymphoproliferative disorder (HV-LPD) and severe mosquito bite allergy (SMBA) are both linked to the Epstein-Barr virus, with implications for related conditions like chronic active EBV disease and EBV-associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.
  • HV-LPD has two main subtypes: classic HV, which is benign, and systemic HV, which can be life-threatening and involves different types of T cells.
  • The symptoms of HV-LPD and SMBA can overlap, with the potential to escalate into more serious forms of disease, prompting the need for clear diagnostic and severity criteria to distinguish these conditions.

The authors aimed to identify determinants of the clinical course of herpes zoster and immunological responses, focusing on pain trajectories. This prospective community-based cohort study involved the analysis of responses to a valid pain survey provided by 375 patients diagnosed with herpes zoster based on clinical symptoms and virus identification by polymerase chain reaction. The authors analyzed most patients for humoral/cell-mediated immune response against varicella-zoster virus at the onset and 3 months post-onset.
