We study the process of thermal convection in jammed emulsions with a yield-stress rheology. We find that heat transfer occurs via an intermittent mechanism, whereby intense short-lived convective "heat bursts" are spaced out by long-lasting conductive periods. This behavior is the result of a sequence of fluidization-rigidity transitions, rooted in a nontrivial interplay between emulsion yield-stress rheology and plastic activity, which we characterize via a statistical analysis of the dynamics at the droplet scale.

The advent and success of new drugs for treating HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer has led to a constant improvement in disease and progression-free survival as well as overall survival. Despite these advantages, the overall survival and quality of life of patients with HER2-positive breast cancer brain metastases are significantly worse than the ones of patients with HER2-positive breast cancer metastases outside the brain. For this reason, prevention and treatment of brain metastasis remain a major clinical challenge and the keys to further improving the clinical and survival outcomes of HER2-positive breast cancer patients.

P53-abnormal endometrial carcinomas are high-grade and aggressive tumors which should be treated with chemo-/radiotherapy. In low-grade endometrioid carcinoma (LGEC), abnormal expression of p53 is an exceptional finding and is typically accompanied by patchy p16 positivity and diffuse hormone receptor expression. The development of targeted therapies that correct the effect of mutations in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and the relevant heterogeneity of the clinical expression of the disease require biomarkers correlated to the severity of the disease useful for monitoring the therapeutic effects. We applied a targeted metabolomic approach by LC-MS/MS on saliva samples from 70 adult CF patients and 63 age/sex-matched controls to investigate alterations in metabolic pathways related to pancreatic insufficiency (PI), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) colonization, CF liver disease (CFLD), and CF related diabetes (CFRD). Sixty salivary metabolites were differentially expressed, with 11 being less abundant and 49 more abundant in CF patients.

Parasitic helminths are a major global health threat, infecting nearly one-fifth of the human population and causing significant losses in livestock and crops. Resistance to the few anthelmintic drugs is increasing. Here, we report a set of avocado fatty alcohols/acetates (AFAs) that exhibit nematocidal activity against four veterinary parasitic nematode species: Brugia pahangi, Teladorsagia circumcincta and Heligmosomoides polygyrus, as well as a multidrug resistant strain (UGA) of Haemonchus contortus.
