The management of early stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presents significant challenges. While radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has shown safety and effectiveness in treating HCC, with lower mortality rates and shorter hospital stays, its high recurrence rate remains a significant impediment. Consequently, achieving improved survival solely through RFA is challenging, particularly in retrospective studies with inherent biases.

Objective: As patient life expectancy has increased and people are living longer than before, the rate of mechanical ventilation among elderly patients in the intensive care unit has increased. Older patients who receive mechanical ventilation and have multiple comorbidities are more likely to have a do not resuscitate order than are younger patients with fewer comorbidities. The aim of our study was to describe the patient characteristics and predictive factors of do not resuscitate orders during hospitalization among elderly patients who received ventilation in the intensive care unit.

Introduction: The Baveno criteria for assessing advanced liver fibrosis were mainly determined by transient elastography (TE), and its pathology-based validation studies in two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) remain limited. We aimed to validate the Baveno criteria through use of 2D-SWE.

Method: Consecutive patients who underwent liver biopsies for various benign liver diseases were prospectively recruited.

During the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) outbreak, many people were infected, and the symptoms may persist for several weeks or months for recovering patients. This is also known as "long COVID" and includes symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, muscle pain, et cetera. The COVID-19 virus may trigger hyper-inflammation associated with cytokine levels in the body.

Sesamin: A Promising Therapeutic Agent for Ameliorating Symptoms of Diabetes.

Molecules

October 2023

Laboratory of Oncology, Pharmacy Practice and Sciences, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tohoku University, Sendai 980-8578, Japan.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by improperly regulating proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids due to insulin deficiency or resistance. The increasing prevalence of diabetes poses a tremendous socioeconomic burden worldwide, resulting in the rise of many studies on Chinese herbal medicines to discover the most effective cure for diabetes. Sesame seeds are among these Chinese herbal medicines that were found to contain various pharmacological activities, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, lowering cholesterol, improving liver function, blood pressure and sugar lowering, regulating lipid synthesis, and anticancer activities.

Background: Pathological fracture of the humerus causes severe pain, limited use of the hand, and decreased quality of life. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of intramedullary nailing and locking plate in treating metastatic pathological fractures of the proximal humerus.

Methods: This retrospective comparison study included 45 patients (22 male, 23 female) with proximal humerus metastatic pathological fractures who underwent surgical treatment between 2011 and 2022.

This study aimed to investigate the associations between hepatitis virus infection and inpatient outcomes of acute pancreatitis (AP). In this population-based, retrospective study, hospitalized patients with AP were identified in the 2005 to 2018 United States Nationwide Inpatient Sample database. Univariate and multivariable regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the associations between hepatitis virus infection, death/discharge against medical advice (DAMA), prolonged length of stay (LOS), and occurrence of life-threatening complications including ischemia/infarction of the intestine, portal vein thrombosis, acute organ failure, systemic inflammatory response syndrome, and hypovolemic shock.

To evaluate the uterine corpus cancer incidence rates, age-specific trends, and birth cohort patterns by different histologic types. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of uterine cancer patients (n = 28,769) of all ages from the National Cancer Registry of Taiwan between 1998 and 2017. We estimated the incidence trends, average annual percent changes (AAPCs), and cancer-specific survival (CSS) rate for the two main subtypes (endometrioid and nonendometrioid) of uterine cancer in Taiwan.

Background: Due to the recurrent nature of uraemic pruritus among patients receiving haemodialysis, self-care can offer patients a means to ameliorate this symptom. Qualitative data on self-care of uraemic pruritus are limited.

Objective: To explore how patients on haemodialysis perceive uraemic pruritus, implement self-care practice, and appraise the outcome of self-caring uraemic pruritus.

The 11,12-epoxy-eicosatrienoic acid (11,12-EET) is formed from arachidonic acid (AA) by cytochrome P450 2J2 (CYP 2J2) epoxygenase and function as an effector in blood vessels. Human endothelial progenitor cells (hEPCs), a preceding cell source for endothelial cells (ECs), involve in the vascular tissue repairing by postnatal neovasculogenesis. However, the effect of 11, 12-EET on hEPCs and neovasculogenesis is not well known.

Self-efficacy strongly predicts clinical performance and competence. In Taiwan, there is no reliable method for assessing self-efficacy in the management of pressure injury. This study aims to establish psychometric properties of the Pressure Ulcer Management Self-Efficacy Scale (PUM-SES) translated for Taiwan and determine the validity and reliability of the Taiwanese version of the PUM-SES.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus that infects many types of cells and causes cytokine storms, excessive inflammation, acute respiratory distress to induce failure of respiratory system and other critical organs. In this study, our results showed that trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite generated by gut microbiota, acts as a regulatory mediator to enhance the inerleukin-6 (IL-6) cytokine production and the infection of human endothelial progenitor cells (hEPCs) by SARS-CoV-2. Treatment of N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) could effectively block the entry of SARS-CoV-2 in hEPCs.

Background: The routine radiation therapy treatment planning does not include secondary radiation and peripheral doses resulting from radiotherapy exposure in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) undergoing Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) using an linear accelerator (linac) of Axesse (Elekta 2538).

Objective: VMAT has a better dose conformity of the tumor and is also operated by adjusting the shapes of mulileaf collimator. However, such treatment is potentially important to improve the accuracy of estimated health risks.

Treatment of pancreatic cancer by inhibiting the aberrant activation of the survival signaling pathways has received considerable attention. We investigated the probable action of DHA on the suppression of cell proliferation in human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cells. Our results demonstrated that DHA dose-dependently inhibited cell proliferation through an induction of cell cycle arrest in human PDAC cells.

Hypoxia and angiogenesis play key roles in the pathogenesis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), but regulators linking these two pathways to drive tumor progression remain elusive. Here we provide evidence of ADAM9's novel function in ESCC progression. Increasing expression of ADAM9 was correlated with poor clinical outcomes in ESCC patients.

Three corrections for overshoot effect improved the dose for step-and-shoot intensity-modulated radiation therapy.

PLoS One

September 2021

Department of Biomedical Engineering and Environmental Sciences, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, Republic of China.

We measured the overshoot effect in a linac and reduced it using block correction, reverse-sequence correction, and index correction. A StarTrack detector was used on a Varian iX. Five segments, 1 × 10 cm2 in area, were designed; the centers were at -4, -2, 0, 2, and 4 cm on the x axis for measuring the overshoot effect on a 10 × 10 cm2 collimator setting.
