Background: Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease worldwide, while carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) is more likely to cause ischemic cerebrovascular events. Emerging evidence suggests that cuproptosis may be associated with an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This study aims to explore the potential mechanisms linking cuproptosis and CAS.

Chronic and infected wounds, particularly those caused by bacterial infections, present significant challenges in medical treatment. This study aimed to develop a novel nanoparticle formulation to enhance wound healing by combining antimicrobial and photothermal therapy using albumin as a carrier for Tanshinone IIA and the near-infrared photothermal agent IR780. The nanoparticles were synthesized to exploit the antimicrobial effects of Tanshinone IIA and the photothermal properties of IR780 when exposed to near-infrared laser irradiation.

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital Clinical College of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing 210008, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Glucocorticoids are standard treatments for sudden sensorineural hearing loss, but some patients do not respond well to them, leading researchers to explore tanshinone IIA (TA) as a potential solution.
  • The study investigates how TA might overcome glucocorticoid resistance by examining its effects on key proteins involved in cell proliferation and apoptosis in lab-created models simulating hearing loss.
  • Results show that combining TA with dexamethasone enhances cell growth and reduces cell death, likely due to increased expression of specific regulatory proteins, suggesting that TA could be a valuable addition to existing treatments for improving outcomes in resistant patients.

Reassessment of capsaicin desensitization in the rodent spinal dorsal horn.

Neurochem Int

December 2024

Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, K.K. Leung Brain Research Centre, The Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, 710032, China. Electronic address:

Capsaicin activates primary afferent transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) in the spinal dorsal horn and induces exaggerated glutamate release. This capsaicin action is followed by a lasting refractory state referred to as "capsaicin desensitization", which is considered a presynaptic event. In this study, using whole-cell recordings and holographic photostimulation, we reassessed this notion by investigating presynaptic glutamate release and the postsynaptic glutamate response during capsaicin administration.

Patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) may lose their hearing. The relationship between SSNHL and total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels is still unclear. The association of TC, TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C levels with the risk and prognosis of SSNHL was explored in this study.

The bile acids (BA) in the intestine promote inflammation by interacting with immune cells, playing a crucial role in the progression of UC, but the specific mechanism between the two remains elusive. This study aims to explore the relationship between BAMand UC inflammation and determine its potential mechanisms.Firstly, we employed a hybrid approach using Lasso regression and support vector machine (SVM) feature selection in bioinformatics to identify genes linked to UC and BAM.

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a hepatocyte inflammation based on hepatocellular steatosis, yet there is no effective drug treatment. Atherosclerosis (AS) is caused by lipid deposition in the endothelium, which can lead to various cardiovascular diseases. NASH and AS share common risk factors, and NASH can also elevate the risk of AS, causing a higher morbidity and mortality rate for atherosclerotic heart disease.

Medical School of Nantong University, Nantong University, Institute of Liver Diseases, Affiliated Nantong Hospital 3 of Nantong University, Nantong Third People's Hospital,, 60 Middle Qingnian Road, Nantong, 226000, Jiangsu, China.

CircRNAs are a class of highly stable noncoding RNAs that play an important role in the progression of many diseases, especially cancer. In this study, high-throughput sequencing was used to screen for abnormally expressed circRNAs, and we found that circGPC3 was overexpressed in HCC tissues. However, the underlying mechanism of circGPC3 in the development and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unknown.

January 2024

School of Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Tuina, School of Health Preservation and Rehabilitation, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing 210023, China.

Objectives: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on changes of ventricular structure and function in rats with myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI), so as to explore its potential mechanisms underlying improvement of ventricular remodeling after MIRI.

Methods: Forty male SD rats were randomly divided into 4 groups:sham operation group, model group, EA group and medication (sacubactril valsartan, LCZ696) group, with 10 rats in each group. The MIRI model was established by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery and reperfusion.
